TV Tropes... ok not the best site for numbers but better than nothing
well it states that income from all toys, cosplays and CD's si around 10 billion yen annually

and I'm not surpised at all - first it appeals to kids and they are powerhouse of each merchandising juggernaut and than to their parents or those who remember series like Sailor Moon
they don't seem to bother themselves too much with/or arent primary aimed at traditional otaku audience... maybe thats why it has like 5th (?) continuum

--- update - so no longer only tropes
so here we have it
...in fiscal year 2012 (they estimated) , that the Pretty Cure franchise will bring in an estimated 11 billion yen (US$141.0 million)...
In fiscal year 2011 Pretty Cure brought in 12.5 billion yen (US$160.1 million)

Became? Rather, it's been popular for many years already, and last year (Suite Precure) wasn't particularly franchise's high point.
And not just with kids. Only first episode is out yet, and my portable pixiv-o-meter went off the scale immediately.

Fresh and Heartcatch is when it started to have a significant otaku fanbase. Heartcatch is catered to Otaku and young girl alike.

so there is some hope for otaku :D
or at least towards those older who still remember what they used to watch in they teen years and now do it with their own kids - that's my little nostalgia-based teory why it does so much money)
of course everything will be fine as long as kids will remain their main target group

ok :D it's number 7... sorry for mistake, was counting quickly
