Not mecha wise, but more like how the storyline goes?
I want an anime that has the main character slowly rising to the top.
Went from poor guy to a rich guy etc.

Artwork doesn't matter. Not to me, atleast. It is a very good anime, unpredictable, very good thriller ride, etc.
It fails on the characters section, though, Kaiji himself if the only memorable character.
