I'm looking for an Anime with art along the lines of Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica and Mononoke. Something more abstract than the usual or in the style of Bakemonogatari/Spice and Wolf that has really intelligent conversation and wit more than thoughtless action. I also like the style of cinematography of Bakemonogatari, with lots of seemingly random camera changes that add to the show and conversation. Thank you very much!

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo for sure! Has some wacky coloring and is very intelligent.

As for the art style, both Madoka and Bakemonogatari are SHAFT anime, so you'll probably enjoy
Ef- a Tale of Memories

Actually, sounds like you'll like Shaft's style. They cut a lot of corners with animation budget by opting to look "artsy fartsy". Yeah, they're cheap as fuck in those regards, and you're probably gonna hear lots of love and hate. You can see it yourself, there's QUALITY all over Madoka, Bakemonogatari, and their other shit. But they substitute it with INSERT SLIDE, paper sheets, flat colors, and other stuff.

A lot of the time they fix it in the BRs. If you watch the TV Bakemonogatari, it's pretty ugly and you can see the cheapassness. When you watch the BR it's all crisp and colorful while maintaining that "hipster" art.

Actually, I sort of prefer Shaft's shitty TV art in Madoka, for the most part. The fixes they added in the BRs are pointless. They got rid of the awesome industrial skyline and since they still can't draw hands they covered them with grass. So take that as you will.

Look into ef. It's one of Shaft's best and has plenty of "normal" animation, but you can see where Shaft's signatures come in.

Well that's disputable, but yeah, Katanagatari is good too. It's a lot more "normal" looking, but you can see the quirkiness.

The author writes some good stuff at fast paces, but he also puts out shit like Medaka Box.

Nah, the art is fine. The problem is it's boring and text-filled and totally asspull-ish.

It's supposed to parody how generic shounen do the same thing, but there's gotta be a way to make fun of generic shounen while still being fun. I do like how it constantly makes fun of Jump while being a Jump manga though.

Busou Renkin did it, so why is Medaka Box so weak?
