Oh here a rarely serious answer from myself

I think Hegel, Schopenhauer, Dostoevsky and Nietzsche are quiet good about this topic. Also the buddhist idea of nirvana or hinduism dreaming yourself out of this loop is a good one.

Objects and less intelligent beings like animals can also contain a soul yes, but working hard has nothing to do with it

I don't "have" one, I AM the soul. This physical body is something that I'm temporarily living in
deg said:

Some do and some don't. I think an overwhelming majority of the humans today are soulless

Having a soul is tied to having a purpose

Too many people now are aimless and kinda soulless

@Nysse reminds me of the saying life is meaningless until you give it meaning

what makes society today kinda soulless? is it too much capitalism aka marx theory of alienation?

is the internet soulless then? or simply addiction is soulless state?

@deg I think it's tied to the capitalistic dystopian idea of consumption being the ultimate goal

If you only consume you don't make anything and that makes people apathetic, meandering robots who just go through the same meaningless routine every day. Doing many different things, connecting and being with people creates purpose and meaning

Internet these days isn't about connecting or doing, it's about passively consuming slop and getting a false sense of connection from likes and views

objects like robots are called soulless all the time because of lack of emotions like drive even though they are driven or more hard working than many humans in a factory for example so ye i equate hard work with emotional drive so thoughts on that?

@deg I think we have very different definitions of what a soul is. Having emotions or even being self-aware at all is irrelevant because even a tree or a rock can contain a soul

The answer is right there

deg said:

There is no opinion on that, and that is a common misconception. The fact is every living human has an anima or soul as we say today.
What is actually debated is what happens to the soul after death.

We do say someone has a soul into their works, to say they are very passionate (animated) about their activity. It's a pretty way to put it. Reminder: they are more passionate about it, meaning they move more, they shout more, they express themselves more. That doesn't make other souls less valuable.

so like there is high souls and low souls? or maybe active (animated) souls and passive (inactive) souls?

Soul in media is stuff that shows the creative choices of an individual expressing their interests in a piece of media. It is the opposite of being corpo and safe.
As an example, a creator expressing their love for TnA, furry art, fetishes, personal story telling style, or anything that expresses unique factor that shows a human put effort into the project beyondnd just reaching deadlines.

One example is the character design within blazblue expressing fetishes and the creators pashion.

@rohan121 so safe products are soulless but risky products are soulful then? like no risk no reward stuff?

and you mention effort so lets say a genius or prodigy does something effortless is that soulless then?

@deg Yes, you can say it that way but high and low could be misleading. Have you heard of having the sacred fire? or a fiery spirit? it's more along those lines. It manifests through activity : compare someone depressed (low spirits) and someone with high tension (high spirits). One will be less animated and the other more animated.

Mind you, the animation of the soul is also described beautifully as the breath of life. Having a healthy spirit (soul) is integrated to the triad of the mind, the body and the soul. They influence each other.

Imo the entire premise of soul stems from a sense a human made it, and gave a lot of care in it.
Art styles and music can also contribute to that sense.

Loz Wind waker is a solid example.

Just as sexy can show soul cute can too. A sense of identity can make a big difference.

So is this thread about soul or "soul"? Because saying that some piece of media is soulless or soulful has very little to do with the literal definition of soul

I like the Aristotelian-Thomistic understanding of it: the soul is the form of a living being ("form" here meaning the "what-it-is-ness," the essence that distinguishes it as an object, plant, animal, or human).
I think "soul" as it relates to art generally refers to whether or not you can tell someone put in effort to communicate their thoughts through it. At least, that's how I've heard people use the term.

I would describe soul as being character and presence. Character has more to do with who someone is than their personality. Presence relations to emotions which may or may not be outwardly expressed.

This video covers a very interesting idea that points to the possibility of something that predetermines the patterns of reality, which is the closest you could say to there being something resembling a “soul”.
Everything has its own essence.

on the philosophical/spiritual side of the question, I can confidently report that I am a soul (however twisted and bitter a one)

I have very clear memories of before I was born, one of which I verified with my mom, to her astonishment

A surface level explanation would be that the soul is a combination of passion, empathy, and relatability, at least for me.

From a more scientific/existential point of view, the idea of a soul is yet another form of abstraction created by our conscious process to facilitate interpersonal interactions and avoidance of undesirable individuals, basically socializing. Hence why, people tend to disparage something that is 'soulless' and appreciate something or someone 'soulful'. Basically our organism has evolved through consciousness an optimized algorithm (this being one amongst many others) for identifying consistency in the positive traits displayed by an individual to be able to tell at a glance (or gut feeling) if such individual is worth our time and emotional investment or not.

In such case, yes any person would have a soul since it is an evolutionary trait of our consciousness, but it is up to the individual to enforce it or not based on their personality and goals in life.

A soul is your true form, a second body inside your current body if you will which animates and gives life to your body.

Another word for it is your life energy.
