Do you hold back tears when there are sad anime moments

So far, I've always held back tears at every sad anime moment and managed not to cry. Honestly, I'm used to that in life too, even during painful surgery. I can't remember the last time I cried.

The reason I don't cry is because I don't want to worry those around me. However when watching anime, it's simply because I'm embarrassed :)

But my perspective changed a bit yesterday. When I was with my friend on the train, he was crying while watching Takopi. When I saw that, I thought, 'Ah, he probably enjoyed the anime more than I did.'
It's so cool to be able to be honest with yourself, even in public. Unlike someone who holds back tears because of embarrassment (myself).

*Ps. Too bad my friend is male. If he were female, it could have been a memorable moment. What a shame XD

No, I don't hold back if I'm in my room alone and no one can hear me. Would I cry, maybe if I love it, but no one will be around when I do it.

I try to, but I always fail. My famous words are always "I'm not gonna cry, I'm fasho not gonna cry".

I do my best not to cry, because crying is messy and tiring work. I don't always succeed.

Of course I try much harder to hold back when I'm in public, because it's embarrassing. But I don't judge other people for crying from anime. Unless they're sobbing uncontrollably and making a scene.

I just avoid the situation in the first place. Watching Takopi on the train is... a choice.

Probably holding back tears is much more tiring.

No, there's no need, unless I'm watching it with someone else.

Takes a lot for me to cry in the first place, because a lot of the moments people cite as sad don't resonate with me or I find it predictable. But when it does, I lose control and turn into the Jim Carrey version of the Grinch after he has an epiphany about the Whos and Christmas.

@JayDaAnimeLord I managed to hold it because my house is small and no privacy.
I rather die than crying in front of the family.

strangely, this mentality still carries over even though I'm not at home ( alone )

Not for me, I don't think. Probably because once I break, I tend to go full ugly-cry with the hiccups and all. None of this "tears silently streaming down" business. I feel completely drained afterwards.

I admire his self-confidence, for sure. As long as he enjoyed the anime and doesn't feel mortified about crying, good for him.

I try to, I don't think I've ever outright cry during an anime seeing that sad, but I have gotten misty-eyed. 😭

@RainyEvenings I think it's unavoidable unless you see the spoilers.
It's true that anime should make people feel better & happier and to make that happens some anime need sad moment or ending.

I recently watch hamatora & Canaan. for me the ending is very bad because it's forced to be happy.

@ItachiDeltaForce I don't know what's darker mature actions anime is....

my friend is big fans of shounen show and one piece. Even some of one piece episode make him cry.

I think crying when watching anime is not symbol of weakness. He just enjoy the show to the fullest.

Not expressing your emotions hurts you, like the Icon of manly men Kenshirou at the end of HNK 1 tells to the mountain of manly muscles Raoh, who already on his own has an incredible tendency to cry and show his emotions the way not even the crybaby by profession Usagi Tsukino did in Sailor Moon. Also, not necessarily crying is due to sadness, it can be an expression of joy and contemptation of beauty, like the episode of Mahou Tsukai Sally centered around this very concept AND like the mother of my wife Elena from Star Twinkle Precure tells her.

@AnimeEnjoyer2357 Just like you, I'm not someone who's easily touched. But there are some anime scenes that are incredibly sad and hard to hold back tears.
Example death note episode 25

@Frans001 Trickster: Edogawa Ranpo "Shounen Tanteidan" yori and hamatora are so similar I mix up some of scenes.

If I'm alone, then I might start crying. Otherwise, I'm trying to hold it back and cry later.

It's not easy to make me cry and it depends on the anime. Koe no Katachi didn't make me cry at all, but Re:Zero did a ton. I also never watch anime in public, so I've no problem of embarrassment.

I don't see the point of holding back though?
