Let's discuss VTubers. They are essentially your uwu anime girls...come to life. Right before your eyes. Playing video games, saying cute things, or being chaotic.

So, why haven't they blown up yet? Why is anime so mainstream, but vtubers aren't? Is it lack of exposure? Is the concept too new? Or is there something preventing it from being picked up from the mainstream?

because it's still weird to the regular public. some of the models are out there and probably throws people off. i remember seeing Kenji's goofy model and listening to his voice, it was pretty good, and i think that kind of thing appeals to the broader public. the rest of it is too niche and appeals to a specific audience that's already somewhat used to what it offers.

Probably not, I think a lot of casuals out there would probably find them a bit too weird. And to be fair some of the vtubers I've seen can reek of the uncanny valley.

VTubers feel too inauthentic to become mainstream.
No, this isn't my signature.

I don't really think normies wanna watch an anime character on stream reacting or playing games. Hopefully it stays that way, I'd rather keep them out of another interest of mine.

Isn't Ironmouse already number one on Twitch?

Yes, I'd love to hear what some 20 years old fat guy thinks about a given topic while having a voice changer and some UwU anime girl avatar. Like, it's a mystery to me how streaming is even a thing. You are literally watching someone else play video games instead of playing them yourself. The only real reason to do so is if you are trying to be a professional player and are studying what other such players are doing, but then again, the top streamers aren't even good at the games they are playing... hell, they aren't even playing games at all these days. You are literally sitting there, donating your 12$/hour salary to some dude with 70,000 viewers, who's making more in an hour than you've made throughout your entire life. And now, you are saying that this dude doesn't even have to do the bare minimum of sharing his face since he can now mask himself behind some cringe 2D avatar? No.

I guess we should explain what mainstream means. Is streaming video game content mainstream? But this is likely mostly something young people watch. It's not common among older people.

But a comparative judgement. Vtubers are probably a less mainstream category than say video game livestreaming because there's less people looking for that kind of content. There's less people looking for that kind of content because it probably appeals to people who prefer looking at animesque models over an actual person, which is a more niche preference compared to wanting to watch someone play video games.

Speculative add on because why not?: Some people may see Vtubers as inauthentic. While everyone who creates Internet content for large audiences is likely changing their behavior to some extent, changing your entire appearance may be seen as next level inauthentic.

@Toadfan64 What, in your opinion, is different than a vtuber playing an anime character, vs say, watching your favorite anime character playing a video game? Like if they made Naruto's voice actor into a vtuber with Naruto playing some Ninja games or whatever. Then it actually "is" Naruto? And thus I'd expect people to like it, if they're a huge Naruto fan?

@149597871 Uhh that's not really helpful for the discussion. Of course men who pretend to be women exist in vtubing...But I am talking about "real" vtubers, as in women who play women characters, and men who play men characters, no voice changers used.

But also, even ignoring that, you're speaking about being against streaming as a whole, so of course you won't approve of vtubing if you don't even approve of regular streaming. So again, notttt really contributing anything useful here

@Freshell In your opinion, is vtubing inherently less authentic than regular livestreaming? Or are they equally inauthentic?

_____

For me, the reason I watch regular livestreaming but not vtubers is because I'm not able to connect with drawings/models. I need to either see the livestreamer's face, or imagine their face if they don't have a webcam. When there is a model, it doesn't feel like a real person, so I don't really get enjoyment out of watching it -- I experience the same thing with anime vs regular TV. I am able to connect with actors more than anime characters. (Before you ask, the reason I watch anime as opposed to real TV is because anime usually has better plot / more action / more creative freedom)

They are mainstream, but of course it applies to a small percent like any other mainstream media. Hololive is very well known as well as revsaysdesu and its a Gundam.

Streamers talk too much nonsense garbage, and when they don't talk too much nonsense garbage, >they are not streamers.

They don't fit in my criteria of interests.
