if you watch enough anime you've seen them make fun of "anyway" too many times to count

why the hell does japan think this word is so amusing? it makes no sense

anyway, get off your linguistic high horse, japan
there are tons of words in your own language that sound funny, even downright retarded

I don't get it either, must be one of those japanese language jokes that are lost in translation.

FYI, there are many more synonyms for "anyway" in Japanese: とにかく、ともかく、それはそうと、それはそれとして、ともあれ、ともかくとして etc. Because of this you can say the same thing without sounding repetitive. Maybe that's the reason.

It's like with "maybe", "probably", "possibly", "perhaps".

Well I can relate to the japanese. English is not my first language and I do use 'anyway' as a joke since it's kinda funny if used properly. It's dumb humour but hey, so what

Japan isn’t sitting around in fucking committee meetings cackling over the word "anyway". That shit is just one of those loan words that slipped into casual/comedic timing and stuck. Same way Westerners that speak only English use shit like Italian words such as "ciao" or French "deja vu" without fucking blinking, or sprinkle in "karaoke" and "tsunami" like they think it's English. Languages steal all the time, and sometimes those words pick up a new flavor or a fucking punchline in the process. Further more... "anyway"... that English word just sound fucking funny to them. lol

So basically... "anyway"... at the same fucking time, they are poking fun of English. lol

"Anyway"... no fucking wonder why most Westerners wouldn't understand why it's so fucking funny. lol

And if pointing that out makes me a windbag, then fine. I’ll happily be the windbag who knows why anime dialogue actually sounds the way it fucking does or even why it's fucking funny. lol

@XMGA030 it's the way you say it, what you imply

like moving from one subject to another when the first went a little awkward

I dunno ain't a comedian so it's a bit hard for me to explain

I thought me using... "Anyway"... exactly the way it's used in Anime would have explained it in itself but clearly it didn't... lol

It sounds fucking funny because it’s sudden and out of the blue... it's shit that is completely out of place too... frankly it could have been any silly English word such as "So", "Well", "Right", "Ok", etc... just "Anyway" stuck... and to "them" the way any loan word is used out of the blue inherently sounds funny in any language. Expletory and totally out of place.

Think of it as someone constantly throwing in the word "meow" after every sentence or some shit like that, if you can't understand why it's fucking funny. Like some fool simply dropping any out of place word right in the middle of a serious convo just to switch or pivot the topic.

The thing that I find most funny about it, is that it's also used to poke fun of English in general at the same time. lol

hmm
Well I thought the sound of the word would be the humorous aspect of it.
Something tells me that's actually why japan thinks it's funny, but only a native japanese could answer that and I doubt any of them will post here.

I'm left with another unexplained mystery.

just for clarification, we are talking about the English word "anyway" here, and not the Japanese "とにかく" (tonikaku), correct?

@krautnelson
yeah, we clarified that already

it doesn't matter though cuz no one else pays enough attention to anime to understand the OP
just another dead-end thread

Clearly this is just a case where the OP doesn't listen to anyone unless it will fit some narrative they can accept. lol

No fucking point in engaging in this topic anymore... let the OP be left in complete ambiguity. lol

I could get my daughter in here who has lived in Japan almost her entire life and explain the same fucking thing I did and they would likely ignore it just because they either don't like the messenger, or just refuse to listen because they already had their preconceived fanboy bubble already made up in their head. Where this shit is nothing but a performative topic used only to only grab attention and ego. lol

Next time @Zarutaku if you want an answer from someone like me, don't drag me into such a shitty conversation with someone's topic who won't listen to me anyways. lol

Does anyone else hear a vague whining noise, as if an unseen insect had entered the room?
