As I was checking my YouTube subscriptions earlier today, i saw a video about a review of Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry. An anime i had completely forgotten about.

The Boy Who Saw the Wind.

I saw it in the early 2000s, back when I just discovered Studio Ghibli films and way before I properly got into anime. Probably the first non-Ghibli anime film I've seen. I liked it okay, it had many scenes that left an impression on me as a kid, with its depiction of war and totalitarianism.

Haven't really thought about it for 20+ years until recently, when my sister randomly brought it up as we were talking about weird seafood. It brought back memories.

A perfect example is "Galactic Patrol Lensman", a Western space opera adapted into an anime during a Japanese trend of turning sci-fi novels and space operas into animated series. Many people in the West have assumed it was just a Japanese Star Wars knock-off because it came out in the 1980s, when Star Wars was still hugely popular. The irony is that this shit actually predates George Lucas’s trilogy by decades.

Essentially, it’s a Japanese adaptation of an older Western sci-fi story that ended up echoing Star Wars visually with shit like spaceships, laser battles, etc... purely because of the era. One of the female characters even sports a near-perfect clone of Princess Leia’s “snail shell” bun hairdo. lol

I never actually completely finished watching the Anime myself where I only caught a few episodes of it airing in Japan by chance. Basically there wasn't any commitment, just flipping on the TV and watching whatever happened to be on... Even after moving to West by the late 80s, I got my hands on a very poor quality VHS bootleg of "SF Shinseiki Lensman" at one of the 1st Western comic book conventions my father took me to. I actually hunted down a domestic laserdisc copy of the film back in the early 2010s, just to collect (I still haven't gotten around to watching it to this day because it's still sealed and currently lost in storage boxes in a closet somewhere from the last time I moved to a new house).

I was reminded of this franchise when one of my real life friends brought up a topic once about if there was any equivalent "Star Wars" like Anime that were released before the turn of the century. lol

Another great example would be "Grey: Digital Target". Yet another obscure title to modern fans that was strictly released on Japanese Laserdiscs, and everywhere else in the West world only produced on VHS and Betamax.

In my case, it's Macross via its heavy hack job from Harmony Gold into Robotech here in the United States. Originally, I thought Iria Zeiram: The Animation was the very first anime I seen via Sci-Fi Channel's anime block they aired in the mid 1990s. Then when I seen the sight of a few pictures of the old Harmony Gold VHS releases of Robotech online years later, that made me realize that I was mistaken and remembered seeing a single volume of a couple episodes of the Macross episodes of Robotech that my parents had gotten for me and my brothers to watch as kids in the early 90s.

All the 5s and 6s in list, the mediocre things firmly set in neutral territory that I don't either like or hate usually end up forgotten.
