One of my friends compared Mion to a Lion and Shion to a Leopard.
Hmm, the ones which most clearly sprung to mind when I ruminated on it for a bit were for Rena, Rika, Mion, and Satoko (it's no surprise for Rena and Rika in particular as since they are my favorites I already likely spent the most time thinking about them more than any of the other characters, even long before this, and feel as if I know them the best).
Rena would be an owl. Considered intelligent and often anthropomorphized in fictional tales as intelligent and wise, as well as fierce deadly raptors when they need to show that side of themselves for survival. Also this may not be as widely known or associated with them in the popular imagination, but it has to do with their dwellings. Unlike a lot of bird species, they don't typically construct their own nests and instead opt for taking over the nests of other birds and other abandoned places and existing structures. Especially certain species like barn owls taking over the rafters of abandoned buildings. It has always reminded me of Rena's penchant for cozy nesting in odd places like in the broken down van and the junkyard in general.
Rika would be any one of those breeds of pedigree purebred show dogs, placed on a pedestal for their cuteness and aesthetic value, sometimes forced or strongly encouraged to perform tricks, with a long history of certified documentation as to their esteemed lineage. That is Rika as one considered in local Hinamizawa village lore to be the reincarnation of Oyashiro-sama, heir to the Furude family and Furude shrine, and even subconsciously gravitated toward as the mascot of the village. In a way she is loved by relative strangers and the community, just like a lot of those dogs are loved, but similarly, also objectified. She is more an object of worship, or at least, mystique and deference.
Mion is a wolf, scrappy and athletic/agile but ultra-loyal to her pack, which in her case are both the club members and the Sonozaki family as chosen heir, as simultaneously genuine familial love plus the family as a yakuza syndicate and unit, as well as its political weight among regional officialdom and its public image.
And Satoko is a raccoon, generally considered clever and crafty, highly adaptable across different terrains and environments and willing to transgress any boundaries to achieve their objectives and thrive in the wild. Sowers of mischief. Often anthropomorphized as pranksters and thieves, which incidentally I also feel like would be Satoko's class if she were in one of those D&D or Elder Scrolls fantasy strategic tabletop or video game roleplaying game thingies (thief class, that is). |
