Lately, it feels like webtoons are everywhere. Platforms like LINE Webtoon and Tapas have made them super popular, especially with their full-color art, vertical scroll format, and how easy they are to read on your phone. A bunch have even been turned into anime, like Tower of God or Solo Leveling, which just adds to the hype.

But I’ve gotta ask:
Do you still prefer manga over webtoons? Why?

Maybe it’s just me, but webtoons kind of feel rushed sometimes. The art style can be flashy, but it often lacks that same depth and polish manga has. When you read a well-done manga, you feel the time and effort that went into every panel. The shading, the compositions, and the paneling—it’s all so intentional. Mangaka pour years into mastering their artwork, and it shows. Meanwhile, some webtoons feel like they're just cranking stuff out to keep up with weekly posts.

Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely some great webtoons out there, and I’ve enjoyed quite a few. But honestly, I feel like manga just does it better overall

I prefer the manhwa/manga in page layout versions if available. There is something with just moving my eyes vs scrolling each panels with my finger. You can see the next page on your peripheral vision too, and that helps to tell the story. Webtoon authors also use vertical pan inside panels that you can never have at once in screen, I don't like that result.
It makes me remember how the ds had manga, you focused panels, and in painful slow powerpoint like transitions you got to the next.

I prefer Manhwa (Webtoons), a surface level reason would be the coloured art, not only because it's better that way but also because the color makes it way more readable. Manga as a medium is very limited, it doesn't have the advantages other mediums have so my ranking would be manga< manhwa< LN=anime. Not that there aren't any manga I enjoyed but it just doesn't make me feel as much as the others I mentioned

I personally don't like the scroll format that much so I prefer manga/manhwa for the page layouts. Also a lot of webtoons I've checked feel a lot like young adults comics from America which is fine that's just not my most preferred feel. There's specifics in the art of making manga and I can sense it even though I have a hard time of specifying all the elements. Also I'm too lazy to write a novel rn so I keep this reply short

@JoeChip Yea ik, I thought op was probably talking about manhwa's in general since he mentioned solo leveling but the title had webtoon in it so i just mentioned it in brackets to clarify what I was talking about.

I think this does kind of make sense, even though anime has grown significantly and popularity, I don't think it'll ever beat the more western style of appeal when it comes to media. And webtoons are easily accessible and in this style. At least that's how I view it. 🤔

I still prefere manga and I don't think that will ever change. Quality-wise, I've read enough slop manga to think it isn't that much different and story-wise, I think it's just a matter of growing the style. I also think that there are plenty of different kinds of manhwa and manhua stories in webtoon format already, but people are only talking about some specific ones. Kind like some people think all shounen are battle shounen and will rarely think that it also has plenty of series like "Sen wa, Boku wo Egaku".

My preference for manga is fully because of the visuals.

I like webtoons and enjoy the variety it provides, but the constant scrolling is tiring. I know that the scrolling can be used to great effects, but usually it isn't so I don't enjoy it a lot. Similar, but a bit better regarding color. Some webtoons have beautiful colors or interesting use of it, but in many it's just there so it isn't truly a plus for me. I love monochromatic art, specially black and white. I find it specially beautiful so I usually prefer less color anyway. Sometimes I even like to turn originally colored artwork into black and white just to admire how it could be like that.

I also love the somewhat compact style of manga layout and how much it varies. Two pages spreads, panel over panel that can look like a collage artwork, many different sizes of panels, etc. You can achieve similar things with webtoons, but the thin strip format and the spacing between panels for pacing kind of discourage most of that.

I like both equally but for different reasons

Manhwa is easier to read due to the way its laid out and feels like you're reading faster and makes time go by faster in a way. So when I'm bored and need time to go faster I will read manhwa

Mange feels like it's more in depth with the storyline and I read manga when I feel like having the "book" experience more than the scrolling experience lol

I haven't really gotten into many webtoons. I don't like how they are formatted and I prefer black and white comics for the most part. Manga having editors while webtoons to my knowledge don't, also seems to have a pretty big impact on their writing quality. Even when I find a webtoon I like they usually don't stick with me for very long or make me that invested. Like you said, they seem kinda rushed, always trying to throw new things at you so you don't get bored or move on. leads to flatter feeling characters when you don't allow for slower moments. But that might just be the case for the ones I've tried.

I kind of hate the Webtoon format. The only good aspect is synced music and ability to add minor animations. It just has no artistic merit to the layout.

I agree with you manhwas are rushed while as mangas really take their time especially when it comes to building character relationships with the reader. Though i do prefer manhwas for just a quick mindless read to pass time, still mangas overall for me

I never liked webtoon format. Personally, I find it tiring to keep scrolling just to see what happens next. Granted, I've been consuming the usual manga format for 10 years so I'm used to it, even then I don't really like 4-koma manga due to how limited they usually are. But that's besides the point.

@Isaiah-

That'^s a very generalized view based on the belief that all manhwa are webtoons, which they are not.

Try reading black-white manhwa like Shin Angyo Onshi, which is known as Korean Berserk, or Yureka, which came before SAO, or The Breaker.

Yes, I prefer manga over webtoons mostly because it's more intriguing to me compared to the webtoons that has been popping out. A lot of webtoons I used to read I dropped a long time ago now and I don't really have any intentions of picking it back up.

I do agree with you that manga has more effort put into it especially considering that there are certain drawing techniques that can only be done with black and white, and taking paneling into account, there's more variety that can be done with it compared to the scrolling method webtoon has, which limits the kind of panels that can be drawn due to its restrictions. There's also more effort put into the stories too, although that could be because the comic book industry in Japan has been longer in comparison to Korea's (where most webtoons originate) but nonetheless, you can find more variety of stories in manga in comparison to webtoons, and oftentime, the story ideas found in manga seems to be executed better compared to webtoons.

I havent read manga in years, its just outdated with the same old same old, you can say the same thing about webtoon/manhua however it is undeniable that they have progressed rather than staying stagnant, Full colored with a layout that is perfect for mobile consumption and while many of them are just sort of copying eachother they still pivot and become their own thing and to contrast Japans/Manhwa repetitive shitty main character with wifus, webtoons usually portray a cool OP MC that rarely pays attention to the wifus. Not saying that either of them are bad i've just had manga fatigue and webtoons coming along was a breath of fresh air. Havent looked back since and if there is a manga that catches my attention ofc i would read it but that hasnt happend in a long time.

well i respect your opinion and understand it ! as for me personally i like both in their own rights ! both have faults and both have advantages ! color part of webtoons attracts me so much and the story part of the manga attracts me too ! so i just enjoy best of both world ! i can't choose one over the other because it depends on what content u are watching and what's the mood while u are consuming that particular content at that time

Well, I don't like at all either reading comics in smartphones nor the vertical scrolling format. And while they are adapted to a traditional layout for physical release, to me it feels a bit unnatural... Sort of like stickers. Additionally I haven't found any of these webtoon manhwas' content appealing so far. It's not that I think they're lacking, though; it's just not my thing.

Then there's the "traditional" manhwa. I'm more at ease with this conception, and stuff like Grass or Banned Book Club sound interesting, but they feel more like graphic novels than manga. Like European and American titles, they're the kind of comics that I'd rather read in a public library than collect.

I've tried to get into webtoons due to the full-color art, but I really do not enjoy the format. Constantly having to scroll feels tedious, I prefer turning pages.

Totally see where you're coming from. Manga definitely has that refined, time-tested feel—some of the paneling and shading really is next level. However, at the same time, I think Webtoons has carved out its own space. The vertical format and full-color art make it super easy to read manhwa online , especially on mobile, and some stories are surprisingly deep once you get past the flashy surface. It really depends on the mood—sometimes I want that polished manga experience, other times a quick-scroll webtoon hits the spot.
