there's a line from the first episode that I can't stop thinking about despite how insignificant it seems.

"I'm always called first for attendance, and I always have to sit in the front. That's the fate of someone with the name Ichinose."

And as a huge weeb with a passing understanding of Japanese, I found myself asking... wait is that true? Why would that be true? my understanding was that a so called alphabetical order for Japanese would still begin with あ. Does it have something to do with the Kanji spelling of her name? Is their is hierarchical ordering to kanji different than just あえいうお etc. Is it just a pun about how she's number 1 (一) or meant to be poetic irony?

part of the reason I even noticed is that I had similar experiences in school, my name being one that always had me at the top of class role sheets that were just ordered alphabetically. How are role sheets ordered in Japan? Why would Ichinose be at the top every time? Am I stupid for even asking? Please anybody with any insight into this, i would love to stop thinking about it

If ordered using 五十音 (あいうえお) her name would be early on, but there are family names that with A. I suspect they may be ordered by kanji radical in order of stroke count. Ichi is a single stroke.

@CottonModem I considered the stroke count thing, and that it is sometimes how kanji dictionaries are ordered. but I also read that in practice it's a pretty impractical way to try and order things. the Gojuuon makes more sense especially for lists of people's names. and yet Ichinose seems convinced she's destined to always be listed first. I'm honestly leaning more toward the idea that it's meant to be a pun, like she's lamenting the universe's practical joke of putting Ichi first. But I could be totally wrong and it is just the stroke order thing. another modern way to order kanji, at least digitally, is by it's Unicode number. by that ordering Ichi is indeed listed first amongst the actual kanji, kana, romaji and special characters being the only things listed before. who knows? would be hilarious to see how a funimation dub would handle that interaction. probably by ignoring the original line all together and replacing it with something irrelevant
