The manga is based on the novel, the anime is also based on the novel. They both have different take on the way of adapting it, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's a novel adaptation, not a manga adaptation. Are ppl really mad because it has a unique artstyle instead of the usual anime artstyle?

Well it's the usual ones who need something to hate on. I personally love the art style and still hope it can bring out the seriousness out of the necessary scenes through a "artistic tonal change" if that word makes any sense like similar to something like Impact frames like art style as we have seen in Dandadan season 2 trailer or similar to the colorful impact frames from One Piece wano Arc like a tonal shift. It would feel really unique if they can do that well.

I was expecting the Light Novel artstyle to be completely honest. Especially when the designs were by someone as good as Yoshitoshi ABe.
I lost all interest after I saw the colorful sloth-like characters. But hey, to each their own. I'm sure some people will love it.

So are these crap looking artstyle and character designs from the Novel ? I mean just look at the face and eyes . You could play football between the eye gap . Comparing the Novel covers , does the novel have such shi**y artstyle ?

Like I said. The character designs for the light novel were by ABe, and they're great (they're the ones on the cover).
The sloth-people in the anime adaptation are original, by a character designer who hasn't been named yet.

They could have simply used the light novel's design. I won't judge the anime by the art, and I'll probably watch it, but this design is honestly hideous, and many won't even try watching it because of it.

Btw, this studio has used this design in previous works, such as Mind Game and Tekkon Kinkreet, but this was 20 yrs ago, so I dont understand why they chose this artstyle now instead of using the LN's one or another pleasant artstyle that would attract the audience.

@Nvaier would have to be CG, bc the armor design is too complex

It's more like we expected the LN one, considering it was illustrated by Abe, the same person who did the design for Lain, Texhnolyze, and Haibane. The artistic and visual direction are exquisite yet I don't sense any AYNIK vibe.

@SteelingMax They could've simplified them, or asked ABe to make a simpler version, exclusively for the show.
Then again, it might be that he was just too expensive to hire.
An in-house chara designer is always gonna be the more affordable option. Too bad the one they went with is... well... very "unique".

Because it fit the grim, hellish tone of the story.

This just looks like some "muh original art style" type bs you'd find on Tumblr back in 2017.

Because they have never seen any anime created by Studio 4°C.

It bein "different" itself isn't the issue cus if u've seen at least 2 of the 3 versions of this universe u'd know differences exist but the end product would be so good it wouldn't matter & most importantly it would fit wut u expect of All You Need is Kill. This is not wut anyone would expect lookin at the other 3 that stylistically still fall in-line wit each other very well(despite the differences). The colors, Armor designs, Character designs, even the animation style. It doesn't make much sense to go for this after all this time. U can go for somethin new & creative while still holdin the inherent aspects of wut's bein adapted. The style, tone, themes etc. This is so drastically diff for seemingly no reason & as a fan it's hard to reconcile or be into very much. I'm not even sayin it'll be "bad" but I strongly question how much this will really be All You Need is Kill. As I said we waited yrs & this isn't the best 1st impression based on expectation. This isn't even a "unique" style. Sure it's unique to THIS specific property but if u know 4°C U know they're VERY comfortable wit this particular look. So it begs the question, Y? Y use this studio & go for this specifically? Or more rather ALLOW the studio to take such a drastic shift in creative direction from every other version. It's a lil more frustratin cus it's unclear how this conclusion is the 1 they got to. I might sound mad but I'm jus sorta disappointed. It could change my mind but it still won't be wut I would have preferred, wanted, or creatively aligned wit in terms of adaptation. Edge of Tomorrow was 1 of if not THE "best" Hollywood LA adaptations of an originally jp origin(LN/Manga). It might also be the 1st to be "better" than the anime & while I love it, it's still a depressin possibility to me.

Just imagine for a second a manga like Berserk receiving an anime adaptation or a movie with this same type of dogshit, ugly looking artstyle, would the Berserk fans like myself be happy about it? absolutely not! well the same shit just happened here, I'm a big fan of All You Need is Kill, it's one of my best mangas of all time and the artstyle in the manga looks fantastic! but what the FUCK is even this? this colorful, diarrhea-looking dogshit artstyle is not what I expected from this franchise so fuck this, I'm pissed and I won't be watching this retarded looking ugly shit.

I understand this dogshit type of artstyle in animes like Tekkon Kinkreet, which I haven't seen btw because it looks like shit, and now I'm seeing that same type of shitty artstyle in one of my favorite, most beloved mangas of all time? fuck this and fuck this studio, I won't be watching this garbage.

the simple answer is why do you think this Series has even strived to the stages of receiving an adaptation. it's certainly not because of the popularity of the novel. the mangas art style and story are by far what most people have come to associate this IP with. even if they used some creative inspiration from the live-action movie Edge of Tomorrow it would have looked a million times better than this. but when you take two characters and their designs that the community have come to love and throw them in a blender and spit out something completely different, no one's going to be happy. it's tone deaf to completely change the character designs in just about every way shape and form and expect the original fan base to be happy with the result. and you can say based on the novel all you want but even the novel had illustrations associated with it they went out of their way to ignore those illustrations too and do whatever the fuck they wanted. So yes, it does look terrible and if you want more examples of why it looks terrible you can refer to this thread I've been adding to on X.

I totally agree. I’m probably still gonna watch this, but it just makes me feel sad to see how one of my favorite manga/light novel series being adapted to look like a generic American cartoon. Don’t get me wrong the animation looks fine, but Rita is supposed to be a cute blonde haired girl with fair skin, I’m not racist or anything but, why would they alter her character and make her look so differently. I just wish they stuck with the mangas character designs, not even the art style just the character designs would have been fine.

Sure, I have a bias of Death Note creator's beautiful art from the manga while never having read the novel, and I love All You Need Is Kill,

but, regardless, that childish art is so ugly. Especially for this type of dramatic story.

Was about to read the manga before i saw this but now im just gonna wait. And given how funny and wacky the live action is, i have no problem with the animation at all, it seems fit with the story. I think its gonna be beautiful.
