Bro don't read this if you aren't caught up.

I think one of Gege's successes, despite his manga unfortunately becoming missed potential, was his characterization of Yuji. Yuji is pretty nuanced, has a unique character motivation and his arc in shibuya is what made Shibuya a 9/10 for me.

But something plagues me. Why does Yuji forgive Sukuna and wants to save him? Shouldnt it be the same reaction he had with Mahito? Yuji's cog mentality has been tested and has changed from Shibuya to current time but there's never been a character arc with Yuji that changes how he views curses(especially Sukuna). And Sukuna has ruined his life way more than Mahito so I don't get it. For me that kinda put a blunder in Yuji's characterization. It's also just cliché. I still think Yuji is one of the characters Gege does well, just that that moment kinda felt outta character, kinda like Gojo not talking bout his students in 236.

But anyways, maybe I missed something. I don't know Culling Games was kinda complicated and hard to binge through sometimes and Shinjuku Showdown was incredibly repetitive past Gojo's demise so I just turned my brain off. Maybe there is a moment I missed or I can't seem to remember. Would be nice if someone below could echo that panel or just explain to me why Yuji forgave Sukuna. 👍

I get your point, and at first I thougth the same as you. But now, I believe it isn't a mischaracterization. The main difference between Mahito and Sukuna are their nature. Mahito was a curse, so he was intrinsecaly evil, he was born like that. But Sukuna was born human, and Yuji, basing in his whole arc, doesn't believe that humans are evil by nature; if they are that way, it's because of something along the way. That's why he mentions how he had his grand dad suporting him, and pities Sukuna. Besides, I think that Yuji believes that is never to late for a person to do the right thing.

See this would be hella good if we got that Sukuna backstory since it would flesh out Sukuna before being a curse and him reigning as a curse in the heian era. But u right I get your point. Thanks for helping.

I agree, a sukuna backstory would be needed IF Sukuna decided that he was human and lived with Yuji. Sukuna til his last breath says he is a curse and is unwavering in that decision. Giving him a backstory just for him to throw it all away would be a waste of time.

acc now that I think about it this only makes sense if Yuji knows Sukuna was human. Yuji doesn't I'm pretty sure. So unless Yuji knew Sukuna was human then a curse then it is a mischaracterization.
