This might be a waste of a forum but i just wanted to connect and talk with other people who love the show. While haruhi was huge back when it came out it definitely fell off. Its a series that didnt stand the test of time like other big titles from the era like deathnote and fmab. and i from what ive collected, as a series it doesnt appeal to young anime fans, or new anime fans regardless of age. For me haruhi was the 3rd anime i ever watched. The 2nd if you dont count shows i watched airing on tv and because of that it set the tone and standard for the high school/slice of life genre for me. As a way to show some love for what feels like a bygone gem, what are everyones favorite aspects of the show??? Long live Haruhism

Didnt watch the show as early as you, maybe a year ago after watching over 200 other anime. But the whole main idea of Haruhi is just so insanely well executed with strong plot and characters. The movie is actually my favorite anime movie in general. Not to forget all the openings and endings are so memorable

it makes me happy to hear that you enjoyed it even with a decently extensive list of shows prior. and i wholeheartedly agree. the idea of haruhi was unique and creative. it was a nice change of pace for its respective genres, and as you so intelligently stated, was done very well. thanks for your input ๐Ÿ–ค

It’s still one one my favourites anime, I’m actually doing a rewatch right now, but I understand what you mean… I think I will still like it if I was watching it now for the first time but I don’t think it is appealing for people that started watching anime only recently. The story is great but it could have been executed better and with less slice of life or just better explanations than Kyon talking alone for minutes ๐Ÿ˜‚

Endless 8 did it's damage. I actually liked 2015 spinoff very much, so it's kinda sad they didn't commited to it more.

I don't really post on here, but haruhi is in a very special place in my heart. I'm a big otaku that watches pretty much anything that's good, great, or perfect. But haruhi is in a weird limbo where I know it's not perfect, and there's even a lot that I don't like about it. But I'd even call it one of my favorites??
the 8 days of summer or whatever killed it for it being my top of top. But the movie is something that I (10+ years later) still think about... I actually think I need to watch it after so many years... thank you for the post..๐Ÿ˜…

i love that. i do an annual rewatch as well. haruhi has and probably will always remain in my top 10 favorites. for me its encompasses every aspect of what anime is perfectly. i would go as far as to call it the most anime esque anime if that makes sense lol it is an aquired taste for sure though. the endless 8 could've been done better/differently for sure but personally i love the slice of life aspects and i also love the tone kyons monologs and narration sets for the story. for me its the perfect blend of supernatural and slice of life which is probably why im such a hard critic when it comes to other shows with those genre pairings

i agree about the endless 8 but thankfully it didnt bother me anywhere near as much as most others. naruto and higurashi were my only other anime comparisons at the time though as i was brand new to anime and haruhi was a different genre entirely so i was more confused than anything. and to me the rest of the series is good enough to overlook it

I just watched it for the first time after getting back into anime 3 years ago. Loved the series. The characters are such a great variety of personalities. I feel this is one I will come back to. I did skip Endless eps 3-7, but think I'll watch them when I rewatch this down the road.

The movie is probably my second favorite only after Rascal does not Dream of a Dreaming Girl. And the song during the credits of it were just the chef's kiss on the film. Haruhi Suzumiya will be a forever part of my memory.

Gonna watch the spin off after I get some other shows I've been putting off watched.

i love to hear it! those are the exact episodes i skip when re watching lol. and i really need to re watch the movie i guess. ive only seen it the once and that was the year it came out so its been awihle lol the character diversity is definitely something i feel like people don't admire enough. whats even more impressive is how unique they all are while still being tropes. i cant remember the last time i watched a show with so many unique diverse characters

Those are the ones I saw online as the best to skip. Didn't want to burn myself out... lol.

Itsuki's English VA made me watch the dub (which is a great dub for the time it was released) because he voices Adachi in Persona 4 and uses the same voice but looks like Akechi in Persona 5, which just made the Persona fan in me smile... lol.

But that end credits song of the movie with the lyrics hit you right in the feels.

Haruhi might be my favourite story out there. I saw the show around 2021 when I had maybe two or three years left of secondary school and it became part of my code to live by. I read the books in tandem with the show, and didn't actually like the Disappearance novel very much, but then, after watching all of Endless Eight, and the anime's original episode, Someday In The Rain, I was no longer able to keep the show and the books as one in my head. So, when I watched Disappearance, it was like watching something completely new. And since looking back, I've only grown fonder of the show that preceded that movie. Then I read past Disappearance. The books up to there are all enhanced massively in adaptation. But the later books stand on their own so perfectly, make such perfect use of the series' always-excellent concept, that Haruhi's become my favourite book series, too.

Consider me proof that this story still lands for people in the 2020s. It's just that it always required a lot of investment on the part of the watcher/reader. In 2006, that was easy: you were already committed if you were a fan of anime back in the day. I don't think people have stopped caring about Haruhi, I think they're just less vocal about it now. It's a very personal series. Reading the later books, I was constantly surprised by how well the author seemed to read my mind. I'm sure that's how it feels for a lot of people. Most of what needs to be said publically about Haruhi has already been said over the past two decades. All that's left is genuine scholarly discourse and completely personal readings. Those will surface in time, when anime as a trend begins to fall back down and only the things of real worth retain their relevance.

Read the books! They're not difficult reading, but they're still really good at making you think, and reading them I've come to think of the author, Nagaru Tanigawa, as almost as enjoyable and ever-present a character as Haruhi herself.

What did fell off?
Can you elaborate?
Its the first anime that actually a good mystery i have ever watch.
And to this day only a bunch can even match that standard.

I watch it twice but the last time is around 6 years ago so im not sure myself if i can remember everything about it correctly.

I watched this for the first time early this year and thought it was just decent.

I didn't care about anime at all back when this was huge, and I haven't really watched many pre-2010 anime, so the show does feel very dated to me in 2024; the character design, Haruhi's abrasive personality and "comedic" harassment, among other things.

I do respect it a lot for the imaginative (unhinged?) story ideas and the guts to repeat an episode 8 times (which I did not skip, yay me), but from the way people talk about this show and Haruhi herself, it feels like I just "had to be there."

I watched this for the first time at the end of 2020 and it became immediately my favourite show.
I loved the first season, I watched the second without skipping the Endless Eight and I loved the film so much I endes up buying the DVD. I watched all three "parts" twice, one with my country dub and one with the english dub (which is fantastic! Long live Chrispin Freeman).
I've also collected a fair amount of Haruhi merch, from manga to figures... I finished the manga and I'm currently reading the light novel.

I don't really know why this series clicked so much with me, maybe it's the 2yk vibes or the fact I just can't get enough of the cast (specifically Kyon).
I also think the anime is one of the best adaptation ever, making and already interesting novel into something perfectly crafted from graphics, performances and pacing.
I would love to see this series continue, but I think that a big part of its modern appeal is also how big it was once and how nowadays is almost a niche thing. I love it, but seeing new generations preferences towards anime, I think it wouldn't get attention even with a third season, a remake or a reboot.

i totally get it and thats how i felt as well. its certainly a time capsule of "you had to be there" and i completely understand how it wouldnt appeal to new generations of anime fans as much as it did back then. thanks for your honesty opinion. your opinion is how i felt the majority of people feel about it.

Still holding out hope that it somehow gets another season.

And

With the current track record of Kyoani seemingly finishing up their older series (Euphonium and Free), it honestly seems more possible now than ever before.
