Mal says that shotgun boy is the prequel. So should I read it before starting this?

Don't. Part of Sweet Home's charm is exploring the world building. Shotgun Boy will tell you straight up what's going on, so you won't enjoy this one as much.

It’s a prequel, but you should read it after.

No need for the "but".
Prequels are always meant to be read/watched after the Main Story.

Reading it after is probably the best experience. Also the end of Shotgun Boy is a flashforward after the end of Sweet Home, so unless you want to get spoiled, it's probably better to read it afterwards.

don’t confuse prequels with sequels. Prequel means before sequel means after.

Not entirely true.

A Sequel is a work related to a pre-existing one, and happening in its future. Meanwhile, a Prequel is a work related to a pre-existing one, but happening in its past instead. "Prequel" is actually a tweak of the word "Sequel" (with the addition of the "Pre", which means before), and indicates that the work is expanding another one, which already exist.

For your example, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 is the Sequel of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1, but Season 1 is not the Prequel of Season 2 ! Season 1 is the Main/Original work, with the 0 Movie its Prequel, and Season 2 its Sequel. Season 2 can also be said to be the Sequel of the 0 Movie. (Well, it's not totally true either, to be honest, as the 0 Movie is adapting the prototype chapters, which mean it is him the Main/Original work, in reality.)

If you want a better (and way more popular) example, you can take Star Wars. You have the trilogy (Episode 4-6), and the prelogy (Episode 1-3). Episode 4 was released first, therefore it's the Main work. After it, we got Episode 5, so its Sequel, and Episode 6, the Sequel of both Episode 4 & 5. Years later, we got the Episode 1, which is a Prequel of the 3 existing Movies at that time, followed by Episode 2, a Sequel to Episode 1, but still a Prequel for Episode 4-6. Finally, Episode 3, a Sequel to Episodes 1-2, but still always a Prequel to 4-6. You can also add the new trilogy (Episode 7-9+), Sequel to both trilogy. That's also why Episode 1-3 are called "Pre-logy", aka. before the trilogy.

The problem is that everyone (including MAL), doesn't use the real sense of these two words anymore. In MAL, it's only used from the timeline standpoint, and not the order of creation of the works.
