Is Pupa bad because of it's abhorrent themes or was it simply just horribly made?

The rep Pupa got in the anime community made me intrigued to check it out But most of the complaints i've seen regarding this anime is that it's simply too disturbing (e.g the "canibalistic incest"), therefore it's bad. If that's the case, isn't it a bit unfair to rate it such low score? Because last time i checked, disturbing doesn't equal to bad. Would love to hear insights on this though.

I think it's because it was horribly made. I don't mind seeing 'bad' themes in anime

I think it’s bad because of how it was made. I love dark themes in anime, but that anime was horribly paced/made in general. Each episode was like 5 minutes long and then almost half if not more (I remember there was one whole ep of it at least) was of The sister just eating her brother. Like... there’s gotta be more to it than that— and whenever they tried to show anything story related that wasn’t her eating him it did a horrible job of it.

I also had the mindset like "it can't be that bad" before watching it. But, it really is just...THAT bad. It's not about the theme. There is tons of anime with messed up themes that is highly rated.

It’s bad because
-the events of each episode are not in the right order (episode 11 was supposed to be in the beginning, and episode 10 was supposed to be WAAAAAY later since it was near the end of the manga).

-art and animation is shit compared to the art in the manga. Manga art is like Tokyo Ghoul as a body horror.

-Some scenes were waaay too drawn out, like the famous onii-chan scene that lasted an entire episode when it was really only half a page in the manga. And the fight scenes lasted far longer.

-The twists and backstory of most of the other characters are completely skipped and some aren’t even introduced into the show.

So yeah. 1/10 for not only a garbage show, but also for making one of my all time favorite manga into one of the most appalling things that I’ve ever laid my eyes on.

Somehow, it gets mentioned quite often, and it has more than 182k viewers, so there must be something about it that attracts people to it?
I am getting curious myself.

I love Pupa, except I struggle to defend it. The writers come up with interesting and fascinating ideas, except either don’t use them or explain them. They have plot points they came up with that got me excited to see, but they didn’t go anywhere with them. The characters actions weren’t explained very well, and more times than not I was confused what was happening. Pupa could of been great. But it doesn’t provide many explanations. Yes, it’s a short anime, but you still have to give the audience some explanation. EXCEPT… the music😭 the music is fantastic omfg. I will never say something bad about both the music and the voice actor’s performance.

Horribly made - far too little happens in the episodes other than edgy schlock - you can deal with dark themes all you like so long as you make something good out of it, but there's just nothing to this other than surface level garbage

It's just a fascinatingly awfully constructed show. The base-material seems like forgettable, run-of-the-mill edgy stuff you'd expect out of niche circles in Japan. But this tv anime is something else, a masterpiece in failure, to the point where I'm genuinely perplexed and entertained by it. One for the ages.
