----------------------------------------
A far weaker case I thought. The 'confrontional' premise is fine on paper, but the idea of making the confrontation in question all about wikipedia trivias really left a sour taste in my mouth.

I get that Riko embodies the spirit of an 'encyclopedic appraiser / detective', so obviously she has to know, or to be aware of lots and lots of things related to these objects, items and their histories - it is after all her backstory, how she got to learn / 'interiorise' this knowledge. That was even something I found to be very commendable in the introductory chapters. However, writing what is essentially a case about all these trivias does not impress me in the slightest - because there is nothing impressive about this story. I am sorry to say that it is not rocket science: every one can copy and paste wikipedia entries about flowers or violins in order to make your character appears more intelligent than he - or in this case she - really is. In fact, I would argue than generally speaking these trivias come off as lazy writing at best, and as terrible writing at worst: putting one or two is alright, but drowning your readers in these trivias should be avoided at all cost.

Fortunately, the case became slightly better as it went on: some of the tricks used by the 'antagonist' were decently thought-out. I also liked the last conversation between Riko and Karen: it had this quite melancholic tone to it, which felt right at home with a mystery focused on a character, rather than on a sequence of events. Speaking of Karen though, I cannot say I found her character compelling. Again, I get the idea behind her: writing her as Riko's 'conflicting reflection' makes some sense - that is the 'Moriarty approach' to writing rival characters, one that has been proved effective time and time again. The problems lie in her attitude, her design, and even her dialogue which are too much on the nose. Lacking in subtetly is one thing, but making your point so obvious to your readership is another entirely. It stands to reason that being the exact opposite of your protagonist should not be the sole narrative purpose of your 'rival-character'. The character in question should stand on its own, and Karen fell short on that regard: with how she was framed by the end, I should hope to see more of her - alas, I was rather glad to see her leave the story.

Overall? Not a terrible case obviously, but one I did not like very much. Some of the plot points were a bit too contrived for my liking, especially with Riko's deductions by the final chapters: some of her conclusions were nothing more than huge 'Deus Ex Machinas' to move the plot forward, because she lacked the necessary details that would have made these conclusions logical. I guess that the phrase 'missed opportunies' is a good summary of the whole narrative, hence the 'left a sour taste in my mouth' comment mentioned above.
