So, there's that...? Might just be me, but this felt rather anticlimactic. Over one-hundred of mediocre episodes only for the finale to turn out incredibly mediocre too. To be fair, I was rather surprised by how unknown this is when I initially started watching it. Though, I can totally see why it is, since this is a very hard show to recommend.

New characters seemed to follow the formula of initially holding a grudge against Kozue to begin siding with her, which is not only repetitive, but the characters are all annoying as well. Then their persona takes a completely different direction and honestly, it makes no sense. There are also quite a bunch of plot holes and I cannot wrap my head around how they missed those.

So, while it does have its flaws, it is still quite a decent show.

I really hated the first episode, so I'm glad it got better soon after. Way more drama than you'd expect, for sure. This show certainly had its strong moments, yes, but I'd say its cons surpass the good it has.. most of the time I felt bored and irritated by its characters.

Giving it a 6/10, but I'd say it could've gotten a 7 if not for certain parts I wasn't very fond of.

A classic, but some things definitely didn't age well. The production felt quite rocky at times compared to some other other TV anime from the same period. But, what it lacked in screenplay and sound engineering, it made up for with pure sportsmanship spirit, with a bit of craziness added.

What's funny is how apparently women's volleyball was held in quite a high regard at the time, and when moved to the international playing field, the Japanese team acted uncharacteristically ambitious, without a trace of humility most of their team sports now have. It even turned out that the anime was quite prophetic, since Japan actually
.

It was also fascinating how many of the story elements and gimmicks like special moves were reused in sports anime much later. Things like the Yagisawa sisters trio attack, or even a school that used computers to calculate how to win against their opponents and so on. Some things were surprisingly insightful, like the treatment of students in schools that win in tournaments, or troubles with the rising economy, and how it was common that middle school graduates would opt to start working rather than to continue their education and so on. The anime was also surprisingly balsy with how it handled death and injury. It's not hard to tell that this and Kyojin no Hoshi served as a limitless source of inspiration for future sports manga authors like Adachi Mitsuru.

With everything said, I had a good time with the anime. The execution was far from being perfect, and some things were borderline crazy, but it's an inspiring anime, even revolutionary in the sense that it was aimed at a female audience. Shoujo sports anime like Attack no. 1 and a few years later Ace wo Nerae had more guts and spirit than most anime, regardless of the demography they were aimed at, in the period until today.

I'm actually confused by the reception in these comments. I thought it was a brilliant show that was definitely ahead of its time. Some of the plot points and aspects of the writing are ahead of its time even now. You can see the inspiration that it had on later sports anime. It feels like Ashita no Joe inspired the boxing and fighting anime. Attack No 1 inspired the team sports anime. Though both Ashita no Joe were influential in sports in general.

Do I consider it a masterpiece? Not really. It's up there, but I personally think it's missing something. I don't know what it is, but whatever it is, it's what's preventing me from eating it a 10/10. I'd say a good score is a 9/10. Even with how janky the anime can get at times, the animation overall holds up well. Only a few spots really frustrated me, with the audio not linking up and a few times the animation seemed to jeck and skip.
