Is it bad of me that I liked this pretty much the same as the original series. I really enjoyed the animation in this (I watched it via the Blu Ray) and while the story was hard to follow for the last 2 episodes due to insufficient subtitles I still generally enjoyed the story and action.

I guess for me at least , having finished the original series today as well, I just enjoyed being back in an actual fantasy setting. In fact Byston Well has never looked so good and neither have the Aura Battlers and general character designs. Everything in this visually and setting wise was a whole lot better than the TV series and I guess for that alone I found just as much to enjoy.

Apologies to die hard fans of the original, I get the impression this OVA is heavily disliked by the fanbase.

I'd argue the animation is actually worse in this OVA than in the series, at least when it comes to the mecha themselves.

Like seriously the Sirbine never looks like its actually moving, whereas the Dunbine and Billbine in the original series at least had that much going for them.

That all being said I do think I liked the depiction of Byston Well as a place here more than in the TV show or the later OVA's.

Visually this series looked great, although I agree the animation of the actual aura battlers was extremely limited. In terms of story this OVA falls flat. There is just too big of a plot here for three episodes, and as a result we're rushed through the story, never really come to care about any of the characters, and barely even really know what's going on most of the time.

If the initial two episodes had been the pilot of a longer (maybe 12 or 13 episode long) series, it would have been very promising. As a three episode OVA it is weak.
The main thing I liked about it were the character designs, especially Berana, who was pointlessly, unceremoniously, and quite unepically killed off in the series' final moments.

Meh.

The thing is that the mechas become way too detailed looking but as they can't keep up the detail, they mostly flail the paintings around the screen. In the series the mechas looked more simplistic but then they were more versatile to animate and could provide cooler fight choreography
