The anime had an open ending which made viewer speculate the ending, while the novel had more definite and fixed ending. Kyoani fixed the bad way of ending the novel in the anime.

The anime and the nivel are a little bit different, the order of the events in both really differ, so indeed the endings are different but I don't think you miss a lot. Just one fact of the story change in the anime that made it to take a different route of the story, kind of.

How do they fix the ending if some people still confused and they still have questions like Gilbert status and his relationship with Violet wasn't clear if it's in romantic way or not because Kyoani didn't explain that and let the fans fight with each other if it's a romantic or as daughter and father or as a good person and if they ended up together or not ... I guess you should think twice about saying the ending was fixed while the fans still fighting for being confused about it

Well, it became pretty clear with the film they are in a loving relationship.

Personaly I think open ending was the better option. They made it free for their fans to interpret Violet and Gilbert's relationship. There are those who think that romantic relationship was a better option, those who think that father-daughter relationship fits better especially because of the age gap, some even call out Gilbert a p*do for confessing his love to 14 y.o. Violet back in the war. Perhaps, putting it simply, making it an open ending was a safer choice to prevent further controversies. But for me, personally, the fact that they live together (or at least that was what the after credits implied), that's good enough
