Hey all, I'm somewhat new to the boards, but not to One Piece. Haven't posted on the boards much, but have been a member for a while and had a thought that I thought was worth discussing with some other One Piece fans. Been a fan for a long time now....started watching One Piece when I was 18, and now I'm 25 and am caught up to the latest episodes. So the show has been a part of my life for a long time now; I absolutely love it. Its not just one of my favorite anime, but one of my favorite stories of all time. So, I want to be clear that I am not in any way calling into question the excellence of, or my love for this great show with this thread. I think this is an interesting issue worth discussing, though....*ahem*
I feel the tone and style of One Piece remain largely the same as it always was, despite increases in art and animation quality (a good thing, of course), but one major change I've noticed in the show, that sort of gradually crept in over time, was the slowly-increasing amount of fan-service and sexualizing/objectifying of the female characters in the series. Again, its something that crept in VERY slowly over time, but if you look at the start of the show, there is pretty much nothing in the way of fan service, and then if you look at the latest episodes, nearly every female character is scantily-clad, and the show is often calling attention to it with fan-service shots of their boobs. Fan service is nearly non-existent for the first 50 or 60 episodes; you'd barely even see any cleavage; then there's a little more......and a little more.....and by Thriller Bark, Nami is getting undressed and groped. And then the most recent episodes, since the "time skip" are pretty much shameless about it (Nami greets Ussop by basically shoving her boobs in his face).
Now, I'm not necessarily saying it all bothers me much. Its hardly anything that deters my love for the show or its excellent story and characters. After all, as I said, One Piece's story remains incredibly strong, and its tone and style still maintain the elements that made me love it in the first place in all its quirky, oddball glory. And I'll be the first to admit that, hey, Nami, Robin and Boa Hancock and pretty hot. But I also am somewhat torn on the issue, because I feel like one of the strengths of One Piece at its start, and something that lent an air of resolve, focus and respectability to the show, was its ability to keep such material to a minimum and maintain a kind of admirable innocence towards sexuality. Sure, there was the always-consistent silly Sanji humor, but even that felt cute and innocent the way it was handled. The only big issue I have with it is that it somewhat decreases the credibility of the female characters; I cared more about Nami and Robin as people, as opposed to objects, when they weren't always half-naked, and they were easier to take seriously when we were given a shot of their face when they were talking instead of their boobs. And it was a nice thing for a long while that the show seemed to treat its female characters with the same respect it did its male characters (which is sometimes a rarity in shonen anime); not reducing them to just a pair of talking breasts, which I fear is what is happening, especially with Nami. (Robin and Boa remained strong characters despite the fan service, I thought).
So I'm a bit torn on the issue, and I'm sure its something any other long-time fan must have noticed, too. I was just wondering what other fan's opinions and/or thoughts on this steady increase in fan service and sexuality in One Piece were, and if others feel its changed the show itself much, for better or for worse. Looking forward to seeing what other people's thoughts are on this subject! |
