| Rei says, "I'm sure [Akihiko] enjoyed racing even up to that moment... not for anyone else, but just for himself." Indeed, 'just for himself'. Rei didn't consider Kira for even a second in the talk with his father. When his father says "Do whatever you want," Rei really doesn't hesitate to just get up and walk away, throwing away any semblance of a stable life with Kira. Mind you, I'm OK with Rei going back to racing; not only is it his passion, but his passion for racing and his love for Kira needn't be mutually exclusive. Even so, I still wish he thought of Kira more before he so readily left the corporate world. I wish he gave it a lot of thought, I wish it was shown that he cared about his future marriage with Kira, that he pondered deeply over the very real possibility that he might die and leave her alone some day. Instead, Rei is completely and utterly reckless. I feel like in his heart, he struggles between what he loves more: Kira, or the bike. Right now, it feels like he chooses the bike. Kira picks up on all this as she's tending to Rei's wounds: Rei seems totally apathetic about her fears... If I were to hope for one thing from the final volume, it's that Rei is willing to comfort Kira, genuinely, and pay mind to her concerns. However... the only problem then becomes, that Rei will lose what makes him a special rider: the fact that he doesn't care about his life. And that's why, I was hoping that he would put his passions behind him, for Kira's sake. I thought that would have been a very romantic ending, even if bittersweet in a sense. |
