I think the original ending was less confusing, tbh.

I actually liked Shinji throughout the series but I was a bit annoyed with him here. Sure he was depressed throughout the series and didn’t want to risk his life or hurt others by piloting the Eva, but now he doesn’t even seem to care about his own life which I didn’t think was super consistent with his character. Nor was Misato suddenly acting like a predator though I guess you could argue she was trying to motivate him and/or just doesn’t give af because of the circumstances, but it was still gross. I think the hospital scene was mostly for shock value tbh, on one hand I don’t even think it’s out of character or anything but, why?

As for the second part, I don’t actually think it’s as super deep and complicated as it’s often made out to be, but it’s not just entirely random nonsense. The overall message is crystal clear: to live in this world and open up to people will inevitably hurt, but it’s worth trying your best anyway. But in the end, the only one who can fully understand and accept you, is you. Go touch grass.

Some aspects like the themes of motherhood, unity (through physical intimacy, mutual understanding, or ultimately instrumentality) have been real and present throughout the series. But I think a lot of it is simply aesthetic, for instance a lot of the Judeo-Christian imagery. Though I would also that is not an inherently bad thing nor does it mean these aesthetic choices are meaningless nonsense, sometimes aesthetic is a meaning in itself. Anime is a visual medium after all.

I enjoyed it but I think I would understand it better if I did drugs or something before I watched it. I have no idea what to rate it.

I don't know if I would call this my absolute favourite anime film, but I have not stopped thinking about this film since I watched it weeks ago. It's better when you read through the Eva wiki a bit to understand some things, although I wouldn't call that a good selling point to newcomers. After watching the rebuild films, this still remains my favourite ending, althrough all 3 endings (haven't read the mangs yet) have elements that I like, they can all stand on their own. I know people like the action scenes in the rebuild films with all the flashy CG, but this film's animation just hits different. I get why people hate on this movie for making no sense, I kinda agree, but I also love it for that very reason, even if it does make sense when you sit down and think about it for a couple of days.

Although the haters on here are pretty hilarious. Users 'calling out' this movie for child sexual exploitation while also writing reviews praising the hell out of Dan Da Dan are a special kind of hypocrite.
