Why did she retired? or did she? I thought at first she just went to overseas to compete globally. Or did she really have some kind of sickness?

As far as I know, she had some issues with her diet. She never ate as much food as needed to be on the highest level so instead of going downhill she just wanted to retire at her peak

Well given it’s based off the IRL horse career his owners basically had to retire him because his diet issues made him more susceptible to injuries. So they did not wanted to risk it and quit while on the top.

This meant Oguri was never quite able to make it even with Tamamo since their record still was
2-1 in favor of Tama counting the Japan Cup.

It's pretty sad. IRL Tamamo Cross' owner was terminally(?) ill and wanted to see the eyes of his first foal before he died. So he retired him now instead of having a 4th year so he could go into breeding. They can't really uma-fy that so it CinGray makes it look like tama is going to see her old man one last time.

I'm not sure how that ordeal ends in the manga or irl though. Kinda wanna see if it gets mentioned in s2 and then check.
