There's a cat zombie apocalypse and then there's a watermelon zombie apocalypse...

Anyway, it seems like this season will have a more serious tone.

The only thing funny was Iyami getting abducted, but that was like in the last 30 seconds of the episode, kind of disappointing. I get they tried to make the 3rd season more grounded, more around the sextuplets lives, but it was interesting, and had funny gags as well. This episode and the one before it, really lacked anything, the only thing it shared with the previous seasons is the characters.

Ps was it just me or did anyone else notice that the characters defining traits were hampered, especially between choromatsu (3) and karamatsu (2), I couldn't tell which brother was which, besides ichimatsu and jyuushimatsu.

It was pretty good! I know we are typically going to transition back into skit formatting so for now we should enjoy long formatted episodes like this one. It was good! A chill episode that I can see myself putting on in the future as an episode to unwind to and think less if that makes sense. Also, I'm curious if these aliens will return? Maybe this season's Riceballs? Who knows, but I'm curious for sure!
Side note, the new open and endings...I'm confused why they are doing 3d now after 3 previous seasons. I'm normally chill with 3d stuff if it's good, but with this it just feels sort of out of place with no other previous OP/ED being in 3d. Makes me a bit worried they had to rush or ran out of time, I hope not with episodes to come for sure!

@amzshow My exact feeling.

It is now supposedly being developed in a new studio focused on ‘adult’ anime, and where is the adult in all this? It looks like Osomatsu-kun.

The plot of the episode was okay, but I couldn't help but say ‘here would go a good idiotic joke’ because nothing was happening and the Matsus look like they've been lobotomized, I have no hope for it to get better lol

Last season was unpleasant because the jokes weren't funny and they heavily committed to stuff I found irritating. I guess we fixed the bad jokes by...just not being funny at all anymore. Can't have bad humor if there's no humor at all. Too bad they seemed to have forgotten to replace the comedy with anything of substance.
Take my opinions and statements with a grain of salt!

I miss the skits, wonder if we will have them back but looks like 4th season wants a different tone to it which confuses me.

Better then the first episode but it's still meh. This season is a ghost of its former self. Might have to drop it.
Its not even funny anymore.

WAYYY BETTER THAN THE FIRST IMO, watermelon's had me gagging like the bros smackin the seeds out of each other. Very creative, digging this 'Slice of Osomatsu' vibe this season has going for it. Iyami being abducted also killed me, great combo of subtle and low brow humor!

I thought this was much better than the first episode, though I didn't really think so until it ended, because I was on edge once I realised what the plot was going to be.

Osomatsu-san has this weird love for "forced state that makes people lose their identities and/or transform against their will" stuff. Especially ending it on that note, which is really creepy. It's happened a strange amount of times:

1. Dayon Tribe
2. Imoni (potato stew)
3. The "They Live" parody
4. Hippipo Tribe movie (especially terrible)

And now we have the watermelon zombie-like state, making it a 5th time. You'd think it was their fetish or something ... but the director is different this time, so maybe this instance is an exception.

EDIT: 6th time if you count the s1 skit where the other brothers all get Jyushimatsu-fied.
-

I have to say, the entire time I was noticing just how much better the art was for this episode. The brothers' proportions looked like s2/the movie (EDIT: also the Official Fanclub shorts) again, which is what I prefer (I think I might know which artist did the animation direction). They looked great from all angles (there's a part where Karamatsu and Choromatsu turned around while Totty was being attacked where their heads looked great in each frame), had good expressions, no s3-onward wonkiness at all. I feel relieved and wish it could just look like this all the time.

I also prefer when a story gets to be a full episode, though I also think it has to be a bit more exciting than this was. There were times where I thought things could've been sped up a bit, too (that shot of Osomatsu ogling the watermelons felt like it lasted twice as long as it should've).

-

The reason I said I was on edge earlier is because I'm just so used to how they love to end this type of story. I was pleasantly surprised to see them give the brothers a happy ending for a change. I personally don't think giving them a happy ending ruins the humour - in fact, I think it's "let's have everything be ruined at the very last second" that kills the fun.

I do think the pacing is odd and it could've been funnier. Sort of like I said before, I'm not a fan of these types of plots. I don't feel any care at all for the watermelon aliens, or similar "characters" like Shake and Ume.

-

I still think the OP and ED are atrocious and basically unforgivable. I'm skipping them. I wish people who were disappointed with the cheap CG and bland environments/storyboarding (seems the budget went entirely to the choreographers?) spoke up about it more - they'll probably do it again if not enough people say it's awful, you know.

Also, for those who don't know, the OP song is actually a cover. It's not even an original song.

I don't mind the slower pacing and full length episodes, but I don't think this specific idea had enough power to fill the full episode by itself. Needed a little more humor, or maybe a cut-away skit to help fill things out. Over all, still eager to see where this season goes.

Yeah, this season feels more lacking than any of the previous ones. I wonder if it's just me getting disinterested over the years between seasons, or is it actually just boring.

@Ten I've rewatched Osomatsu-san a bunch of times (didn't particularly lose any interest over the years), and these s4 episodes are noticeably slower-paced. I don't know if "slower-paced" is even the right term - it feels like it's stretched-out to fill out time to me.

For those who don't know, this episode was inspired by an Osomatsu-kun short movie called Osomatsu-kun: Suika no Hoshi kara Konnichiwa zansu!, and it's 10 times better than this episode ngl
