Is realism in games actually more mainstream than stylization and fantasy?

So I recently got curious why AAA games avoid striking designs like that of ZZZ, Blue Archive, or Genshin. Apparently Grok stated realism is favored in AAA games as it is for a broader audience.

I was thinking, is realism really to a wider audience than these titles which crush most IPs in profit? Am I being gaslit?

I notice Nintendo is one of the top selling gaming companies, and they almost never chose realism to style. Even titans like Fortnite use stylish appeal to sell.

Do realistic games actually have a bigger audience?

I don't know which is actually more popular among the average gamer but to me stylized graphics with iconic characters and fun memorable gameplay mechanics even if they're unrealistic is a lot more fun than this eternal strive towards realism in fiction that has plagued the video game industry for way too long

A rare example of realism in video game mechanics being fun was when physics started getting implemented and it only really applies to a handful of games like the Source engine games with Half-Life 2 or the Frostbite engine games like Battlefield Bad Company 2. Aside from that I think fantastic greater than life stories and characters and amazing well written worlds are a lot more interesting than down to earth stories and characters that look like they came straight out of your average daily life

But I'm also someone who finds Hollywood action movies set in the current day with somewhat normal characters to be super boring despite it seeming like lots of people like those kinds of movies way more than sci-fi, fantasy, and supernatural stories so I'm not gonna say that my opinion is necessarily the only correct one

If you are talking about AAA games specifically, then to some degree, though yeah there enough examples of big AAA games not selling on rural realism. Games in general though? No. Minecraft and GTAV are two of the best selling games of all time, so that kinda shows how divided it is.

For AAA, it's basically ultra realism vs Nintendo, and granted Nintendo is pretty big.

Yep, and it's kind of sad too. One of my favorite things about gaming back in the day was being able to escape into a fantasy world that look nothing like our own. Now it seems like what the mainstream wants is games based more in reality. Kind of defeats the purpose in my opinion. Not saying these artistic styles don't have their place, but they really shouldn't oversaturate the AAA market.

I much prefer stylized graphics, I don't play games for realism.
No, this isn't my signature.

Yes but above all where does this bullshit come from that claims that The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess have a Realistic Graphic? When in reality Yusuke Nakano He said that the game's graphics are more like a Hieronymus Bosch Painting.

I think stylized games will always be more iconic, the more recognizable character silhouettes and distinct color pallets will always have a advantage over realism. but some people prefer realistic graphics over stylized graphics which is fair enough.

My problem with hyperrealistic games is that they don't do anything fun with their character design or stage/world design. I want to see characters that look like living breathing cosplayers that actually live their legends. I want to see bright blue colorful skies and brilliant colors like real life without crappy filters. As someone who is a fan of Shinkiro from SNK, Final Fantasy's realistic modeling of their casts, and so much more, it's honestly a let down when we can't have both or more.

It's not the matter of hyperrealism being a problem, it's how it's used (blah blah blah lecture's out of the way but people forget this lesson stupidly often so I have to hammer it in). I honestly think "hyperrealistic brown world" design is a manifestation of mental illness and more subtle form of actual escapism. No one had brown vision on back then when they went to war out in the forests and fields, and when gore decorated and sullied the lands filled with nature. That's actual reality of war and strife. Tossing brown, gray, and shade over everything to make it "fit the mood" is just hypermachismo horseshit cowardice puffing up their chest and swearing "im not afraid".

I'll just bump this dude just because he has some similar game taste and the same perspective on modern game visual aesthetics.

Video games aren't even worth playing anymore. Just watch some anime and porn.
