Japan has noticeably different vowels. So it sounds more normal there, pronounced like the "e" in "hen." But written down, yeah, it's funny and you have to read it that way regardless of how much you understand.

On the opposite side, you can read the name "Mami" and it looks fine. But when they're actually saying the name in an English dub, you tend to lose focus pretty quickly, depending on the context of the scene. Usually funny in most cases.
