One part of the anime community that I love, but wich sadly seems to be slowly disappearing, is the AMV part of the community. Not that I'm particularly involved with it, but I just enjoy someone putting some creative efforts in their hobby, and watching AMVs remind me of a simpler time when the Internet was vastly different and Youtube way less commercial. So, to kick this of:

What's your opinion on AMVs, do you watch some? Ever searched the most obscure corners or Youtube to try and find something for your fav show? Maybe you made a couple ones yourself? Do yo prefer impressive, flashy ones with lots of effects, or maybe you just want clever song and image choices? Tell me everything >:3.

Besides showing my age and talking about this nostalgic aspect of the anime fandom, I mostly wanted to post and find some cool AMVs, so hit me with your best ones, and prepare for a deluge of Utena and NGE AMVs!

----- DISCLAIMER -----
By their very nature, AMVs are often spoiler-heavy. In doubt, treat any video in this thread like a potential spoiler.

And lets start with an AMV that was made to celebrate the end of the Rebuilds. It's extremely nostalgic by nature, really fitting when I stop to look back on nearly 3 decades of obsession with Evangelion. One can only love the effort that went into layering/mixing reused frames and similar scenes from the show and movies. Enjoy, fellow anime fans ;)

As a newer fan, AMVs are mostly a mystery to me. I have seen a few sakuga compilation MADs, though, if those count...

Really liked this one for Wonder Egg Priority and Kero Kero Bonito:

The anime was ultimately a disappointment, and I don't listen to this band, but I thought these two go really well together.

And WEP is just such a beautifully-animated show. It honestly shocks me every time I watch this video or any other clip.

@perseii Well, I thin MAD is just the japanese acronym for AMV, so I'd say that counts! The focus is often more on cool animation rather than on one specific aspect of a show and tying the story and song together; but then again cool animation is a big reason why most of us watch anime, isn't it? :p

I like how many of these videos are extremely specific, and give you the names of the key animators, too. I just found a 12 mins compilation of mahou shoujo transformations...
I'm kinda surprised, heard of Wonder Egg, but I was expecting something totally differet from the video you posted. The animation does look great!

edit: This made me look for MAD dedicated to Imaishi...

Yeah, I know why he's my favorite animator.

@Deathko Yeah, I like sakuga MADs because they focus solely on two things, imagery and music. I like it when I can simply look at the way the animation is cut together and get some kind of reaction or emotion out of it.

I understand people often include the story/character context in these videos, but those aren't as immediately appealing to me, unless I've seen the anime myself (which is often not the case). But I'd like to check out more of this type of AMV posted in this thread.

I do like the Imaishi MAD you linked, and I swear I'm going to start Gurren Lagann any day now and finally get into his work...

I love watching AMVs

Ever searched the most obscure corners or Youtube to try and find something for your fav show?
Yes, I still watch even older AMVs that were made in pretty low resolution

Maybe you made a couple ones yourself?
So far I've made 4 AMVs but they aren't that good, sharing my best one so far

Do yo prefer impressive, flashy ones with lots of effects, or maybe you just want clever song and image choices?
I usually prefer the ones that match the lyrics but I tend to watch just about everything for the anime I like

Here are some AMVs that I like

AMVs are like Jigglypuff lullaby, I fall asleep listening to them. AMVs for me are Unexpected sleep trigger specially if it has heavy guitar riffs, my body decides it’s bedtime .

@nirererin I gotta admit, I'm not interested in One Piece, but I really dig Oda's art style. I wish he wasn't kept in a cage forced to write OP chapters until his death, because I'd gladly read some shorter manga from him.

@Maou_heika Ah, a fellow granps older fan. Damn, you still watch the 480p AMVs? I must admit I can't... Didn't really bother streaming anime except NGE until 2015, so I kinda skipped the 480p era :p. For some shows it's crippling tho... Like, most NGE AMVs are almost as old as Youtube...
Never seen the show so I can't comment much, but 74k views? You're a YT star! I like the fact that it doubles as a karaoke video, that's uncommon in the type of AMVs that I tend to watch, and needing a separate page for lyrics is annoying u_u

- Wait, the first song, "For Fruit Baskets", feels very familiar... Is it used in other shows or something? The chords grid is really common, but even the melody sounds familiar...
- Liked the 3:34 - 3:40 section in the second one, with quick fades.
- Oof, 360p! The first part with the plane and dancer and the parallel betwen the crash and her fall is great tho... I wonder if it's presented like that in the show, or a decision from the person who edited it...
- Why are these creeps trying to burn the poor loli ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ.

Some shows seem to have incredibly active and great AMV communities. For some reason, Youtube is filled with recent Utena AMVs, and most of these people seem to mostly make videos about Utena. Crazy good girl power songs, great care put into matching lyrics and images, the level is just so high compared to some other anime I checked. Well, the show does make it easier, with awesome imagery. The downside is that most of these AMVs are VERY spoiler-heavy, since a good chunk of the coolest imagery is stacked in the last arcs... Can't have an Utena AMV without Utena punching the ground to teach it a lesson!
I'm looking at my AMVs playlist RN, and 2/3rds of it are Utena videos... Yeah, expect to see lots of those here (^:

!!!MASSIVE Utena spoilers!!! No, really, I'm not joking, do NOT watch it if you haven't seen Utena but plan to.

This one is so good. From 3:00 to the end gets me every time. Whoever made it just dropped this masterpiece and left. Incredible move.

I watched the AMV while I was in the middle of watching One Piece. Honestly, it really helped me stay motivated; getting through 1000+ episodes isn’t easy.

480p might look pretty bad on desktop but it looks fine on my mobile screen (when I'm not using full-screen mode) besides fandoms for some older anime are dead so the only thing I can find are some really old AMVs

Even I'm surprised that it got that many views. I tend to use Japanese songs so I always add the lyrics and translation so those who can't understand Japanese can understand the AMV

It's the opening theme of Fruits Basket (2001)

Hmmmm... it looks like my gut feling was right, AMV culture is kinda dying. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted! I'm just going to drop these two NGE masterpieces and let this thread follow its natral course towards the depths of AD.

I find it interesting that the two NGE/Kate Bush AMVs use the same scene of Rei II dying as the pivotal point of the song/synch it with the drum fill. Coincidence or inspiration, it mirrors the show pretty well, and Running up the hill's lyrics match the theme and atmosphere of the show so well.
I really gotta rewatch that incredible cartoon for the 10th time >.>

@nirererin eah, major turn off for me sadly. I've heard of One Pace, but apparently it's 500+ eps too...

@maou_heika true, I'm less picky on mobile. I remembe a friend of mine dumping a month of salary into a 4k phone years ago, I was like... wtf...
I feel the title should have been a big clue that it was Fruit Basket's OP... It's also one of the only things I enjoyed in the show, so shame on me for forgetting about it. Thanks!

Sometimes I just want to see dance sequences in anime (and other drawn media):

Animating dancing just looks really hard, and it's probably a mostly thankless task, compared to animating flashy action sequences. And in many situations it feels extra, like they didn't have to go that hard. But in a lot of ways dancing might be the peak of animating body movement, its only purpose looking beautiful, cool and expressive. And it's just plain nice to look at, no words or context needed.

Now that's a fun fact. Back when I was watching One Piece, I honestly had no idea about one pace or that it even existed. So, my only option was to either watch one piece or not watch it at all, haha.... It's true, sometimes it was frustrating, but there were moments when that frustration turned into bliss.
