The adaptation was done horribly in my opinion.

If you check out the release order for the light novels and story. Something might appear odd.

first of all, what was episode 12, was actually an adaptation of a oneshot that was released FIRST before the whole thing, and the light novel actually happened far later.

so if you were following the story from release it would have been obvious who survived (aka rat, since he was the NARRATOR).
also the one shot literally was him reminiscing about the battle and the after math etc(which came out FIRST).

adaptation would have been far better if they had the episodes on release order, first they show the rat living his school life, reminiscing about the juni taisen, then the rest of the story would have been "recall" or flashback at the events in the story, aka how the novels were written.
this shows that the rat is not only an unreliable narrator since he forgets, but also that it isn't a mystery who survives, which there was only one path where he would have survived etc. so the whole battle royal would have been a Framing Device for his flashback etc.

rather than this, the story is just generically portrayed as a battle royal which misleads people into thinking it is one,
when in reality Nisio didn't seem to care at all about the battle or the world building when writing the one shot that led to the original series, rather than the whole series was simply an allegory for what pertains to human ambition and right from wrong.

One of these problems that ONLY become a problem when these pesky source material lovers starting to join the conversation....

You guys are like the short haired, vegetarian lesbian couple at the christmas table ruining everyones fun with topics like "Kids in Africa" and "Climate -Change" xD

Why should I care about the release order?
The story was coherent. I LOVE battle royale Anime and I can't imagine that "better world building" and getting rid of all this fast paced, cool and uncomplicated action in exchange for more exposition would've made this better for me.

It was just a fun Battle-Royale and since I wasn't butthurt about it not exactly following some light novel order I never heard of I was able to enjoy it for what it was. I didn't see anything coming. It was pretty unpredictable and exciting to me. It was fun!

If anything I appreciate them cutting some stuff, so this was a short and sweet experience.

Geniune question- have you ever read the book it based off?

If anything, anime actually shows characters' backstories, which never happened in the book, and tries its best to flesh out the characters.

As for the order... why? Why it needs to be this way? The winner still was a surprise for some people, myself included, so why would you ruin the surprise? I just can't see story winning from showing Nezumi won FIRST and then showing how the battle went. And yes, I know of the ending / Zodiac order.

Also, comparing manga one-shot and light novel release dates is absolutely idiotic because, well, IT'S TWO DIFFERENT THINGS?? It's not like manga was published in the same book, before the chapters, if anything, it's very confusing for the light novel readers who got no ending whatsoever and had to hunt down some random one-shot printed in a magazine. So anime did everything absolutely right. Except ugly CGI that is >_>
