Underrated Great Manga as a first installment if it gets a proper sequel. 8/10. The direction to how the story switches to different characters is arguably somewhat flawed for being imperfectly seamless by abruptly starting to introduce six+ new characters in each later chapter after the first chapter out of six. Although, the prologue did hint at some of them, but the first lengthy chapter and synopsis gave the wrong impression that the story would be focused on the mother android and the child. Anyway. Fortunately, each new character is intriguing for how complex they are. From a badass old woman veteran originally nicknamed the Weeper, to later, The Shrieking Lone Warrior for her survival in a tough battle, followed by a squad member who was saved by her, who later becomes a great friend. Both part of The Weeper Squad, who her friend is the cause of that nickname because the badass old woman used to always cry as a rookie before surviving that battle alone. After that, there's the maid and her lady who she serves and protects. Their main sub-plot is one of the most intriguing of the supporting characters, because the maid is serving a copy android of her master who is deceased. The Lady created this android to keep her business of aiding in war as royalty running, to avoid chaos if people learned she died. The maid, who as a child tried to steal from their mansion was made into her maid by the Lady herself when she was a child princess. She also requested to please take care of this copy android of her. As spontaneous as she is though, she created her android to be as powerful as she could make it, with her own will and personality, yet asked and hope that her copy would also fall in love. ... Which is another somewhat odd romantic sub-plot with the Boy who has a subtle android (non-perverted) "fetish" for being raised by an android. I don't mind it, but it's a bit conflicting for a few reasons. Mainly from the first hint before this plot started when he revealed that he does have an interest in one girl when Mother Android asked, but I don't know if he meant her, or Hawkeye girl, which didn't seem like it at all, now that he's interested in the Android Lady. So, I guess he kinda likes his mother romantically, or maybe a new unknown character. Finally, out of the intriguing supporting characters, there's the future villain. She's a peculiar monstrous android with memories as a former human. Her psychotic personality and design like the slit mouth woman is cool, but her tragic death and what she's turned to is what's most interesting. Her companions are odd. There's a snake-like head android with a sharp tail as a body of a female android, and a man she ripped his face off with her mechanical jaw who wears a mask who he serves, somewhat willingly for survival, but not exactly with discontent. The least interesting two supporting characters are the Male Trans and the Hawkeyes. The Male Trans is a friend of Mother Android and Boy. A Male turned drag queen who fell in love at first sight by The Shrieking Lone Warrior in her prime, unless it was another badass sexy woman. Hawkeye(s) is a cute girl in a pony tail. Fearless and curious, who protects her dad's shop, and met a stationary ai turret who he fell in love with, which she now uses as a sniper rifle in a mecha suit. Unfortunately, both are underdeveloped and didn't show much more. Drag Queen is a great supportive friend to the main duo though, and provides fan service by helping Mother Android any way he can. Including dressing Mother Android in various cosplay for finance with photos, and dressed Boy as a girl once. Anyway, disregarding all of that and their potential... including the few scenes of pretty good action. ... The most charming and overall entertaining dynamic is the two main protagonists. Even though Mother Android shows little facial expressions with her faulty face mechanics that could be fixed to be more expressive, we and Boy can see how much she cares and worries for her son. To the point of wanting to keep him for herself if she had found his parents. She isn't certain why she started searching for them, which she stopped after Boy got mad, but I think she ultimately did to do her best to avoid them so they don't bother them. Throughout the first chapter. A lot happens. There's glimpses of when he was younger, how she learned to cook to feed him, and doing anything to ensure love and comfort for her son. Funnily, big breasts for a mother's love, from love doll parts, to lighter body parts to avoid injuring him, using her mask since the beginning to not scare him anymore. She does so much to care for him. Their dynamic is incredibly charming and beautiful. As a teenager, he has his slight rebelious phases or embarassements, but they're a great family. Update: There's actually publishing sequel, titled 'Mechanical Buddy Universe 1.0'. |
