So how does the "past life" thing works in this one?
Because to me it looks like ivy has someone "talking" to her telepathically, rather than her herself remembering stuff.

Sorry if i'm missing something obvious.

IDK both but the story will probably and eventually adapt it, why not wait?

It makes the story more exciting to watch.

or simply read the source.

lastly, go to its wiki if you want.
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

***MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD****

Her past life is like a phantom memory that also sometimes acts "independently" in certain situations. It is a part of her but Ivy doesn't have full control or access to the memories. In specific events, the memories will suddenly start acting out as impulses and thoughts that Ivy herself doesn't fully understand and that results in the "second person in her head" moments. She gets a reflexive thought in her thought in her that she then has to understand and process.

An example would be the standard trope in isekai where she first finds rice in the world. Her past self memory activates a want to eat rice that Ivy doesn't fully understand. Her past self also helped her with the knowledge needed to start surviving on her own after being thrown out. I assume the anime will start covering that part in flashbacks in the coming episodes, based on the village scenes in the PVs.

A good, similar example would be the Wheel of Time series and how Rand and Mat's memories are handled.

This is mostly explained in the LN pretty early on but the reason why her memory works that way isn't explained.

LN/WN later side note:

so basically, she has these "deja vu" moments but doesn't actually understand anything, then she experiences whatever the memory showed her for the "first" time? ( like learning what an "ivy" was)

Hmm, she does understand the direct concepts and things that come from the memories but not always why that memory or thought came up or how they are connected to other ideas. This is especially true if she has a "playing the straight guy" moment for slang or concepts unknown to her world.

From the anime, we had the scene where she talks about disguising herself as a boy and as part of her thought process, her memories triggered a reaction that resulted in her past self's memory coming up with the phrase "kamonegi (duck+spring onion)", which is Japanese slang for easy prey or a sucker begging to be robbed. Ivy knows what duck and spring onion means but not the context of the phrase to mean "I'm hungry, oh look there's a convenient duck next to a spring onion just waiting to be turned into dinner", just like someone who learned Japanese as a second language wouldn't understand the context right away. Hence her confusion at the memory.

It does make for some amusing moments, (super minor spoiler)

@Callidin So it's nothing like the manga "Multi-Mind Mayhem". Where someone soul gets Isekai into a body. They just share or feed information to the owner of the person, while still acknowledge they still exist.

Exactly. Properly reincarnated as far as we know. Her memories were there from the beginning but, as mentioned above, she has a hard time accessing all of them consciously.

(Light but late WN spoilers/theory, be warned unless you aren't planning on pursuing the series in written format)
