This series is perfection. The slow pacing is perfect for the sad, lonely life that Frieren lives. Her handling of the demons was simply amazing. The anime isn't flashy and manic like so many others, it sings of the sadness and lonelyness of outliving your dearest friends and the bitter sweet joy of making new friends that you will outlive. I pity Frieren and I'm sure that's exactly what the anime producers want.

I don't think Frieren considered her life to be sad. Or lonely, for that matter. She is too detached for that and has reduced affect. The time lapse of her doing her thing for decades and centuries clearly showed this.

@dunkelfalke I guess the point that I was trying to make is that the detachment she had for the world and for humans was disappearing and that she's slowly learning to realize that fact. Sad? Maybe wistful is a better word. At least that's how it appears to me. As I grow older and I learn of my friends passing I can identify with Frieren. My friends and I also set out on a great quest, we faced odds the average civilian knows nothing about, and many are dying from what we did and what we were exposed to. I never considered my life sad, but when I look at photographs of the the units I served with and realize how many of my brothers have gone before me, I suddenly realize that I'm not immortal. That's a hard lesson we learn too late. Frieren's journey puts what I feel on screen as the memories of her great journey come back to remind her that she too used to be young.

You can't really because you don't know how it feels to not care about other people much, because humans are social animals. Some abnornal humans, like me for example, aren't, though. And Frieren is not human at all.

@dunkelfalke I agree, but the point of the Anime (to me) is that she's learning. Why else would she visit her old friends and embark on a long dangerous voyage to talk with Himmel? The fact that she repaired Fern's staff instead of replacing it is evidence (to me) that she's learning

I suppose the answers to these questions will be answered next year in Season 2

She definitely is and it is perfectly possibe for detached people like her to learn how to feel, but these emotions will never be as strong as those of an average human. Imagine that you have a dial of your emotional level and it is stuck at two or so. This is how she is always so level-headed and analytical by the way.

that was such a beautiful and intense build up, i'm so happy we got to see frieren's mana range and i'm so excited to see how powerful her little apprentice will be with even just five more years of training. Damn it took ~920 years for frieren to become powerful enough to kill the demon king successfully-- how strong must he have been?!

As I said, the anime started from episode 9—and this is the second real episode! Now I can say I’m actually excited. The anime has finally grabbed my attention, and I’m adding my voice to the Fliamme fan club! I really liked her—she’s the only one whose dialogue actually had meaning in this anime…

I loved when Frieren coldly said, “Aura… kill yourself.” LOL. A 500-year-old witch flaunting her power just commits suicide as if she was nothing to begin with. The scene where she cried was heartbreaking, honestly.

Maybe I’m just an emotional human being after all… but I think Frieren’s lack of emotion is actually her true strength.

Wow, this was amazing! We got to see Frieren’s strength and also her bond with her sensei. The last scene was intense and graphic, but really cool.

This was a great episode that gives us a more of an understanding of why Frieren wants to get rid of demons and the skills she was taught by her master. Being aware that suppressing their mana is wrong but it is one way to get around to defeating strong demons besides physical strength is an interesting strategy that not only surprised me but also shows how strong Frieren really is.

I never knew the best spell in a fantasy series would be KYs.

All of the Frieren backstory was amazing. The final order after the scales tipped was also top notch. If the anime keeps this pace up, I’ll love it the whole way.

“Aura, kill yourself.”

One does not write lines like that, not expecting it to be the ultimate mic drop in context and live on famously.

Man, I still can't get over Aura's death. It's such a waste of a great character design, voice acting, and especially that smug personality. Any other anime and she would have been the main villain throughout its run or even the protagonist. But here she got snuffed in just one episode (after her proper face reveal). If only she wasn't a demon.

>Show tells us last episode artifact can only be defeated by having higher power level
>We learn in flash back that Frieren has higher power level and is hiding it
>We just saw Frieren's apprentice hide her power level to kill a demon
>"Ok," I think "so Frieren is clearly going to defeat the demon girl by tricking her into believing she has a lower power level. This must be the end of the episode"
>Episode's only half over
>"???????????????????"
>Another flashback, talking about why demons suck for the 17th time in the last three episodes
>More flashbacks, plural. They're kind of nice, but I'm still thinking about the ending I already know is going to happen because they telegraphed it.
>Finally we get to the obvious conclusion. It takes another 5 minutes. Pacing is my passion
>Thanks, I hate it. 1/5
