I think they have 2 main goals - SURVIVE AND FIND OUT THE SECRET BEHIND PETRIFICATION

and are building important stuff , leather shoes will deviate from the main goal of finding how people got turned to stone. and shoes is not important in terms of survivality...

leather is a huge industry...it requires several tech and probably waste of time...

anyway thats my theory ....its fiction at the end of the day and sticks to the main story...

I think I have heard that they use ACTUAL varaint of TRADITIONAL JAPANESE FOOTWEAR....

I think they just like them tbh. If you go barefoot for a few years irl it'll be really hard at first but by the end of the years going back will be really uncomfortable and walking in shoes would be unironically kinda difficult. Maybe Senku just doesn't see the point in taking the time out to have everyone get used to regular shoes when they're already so nimble in the stone shoes. This is entirely me chatting shit btw in case somebody wants to call me out on it.
