I've watched a few episodes of this season, I was busy so I picked it up again today and I'm having a hard time understanding what's going on.What is the sanctuary and why can't they get out of it.Who can get out.Why is Subaru suspicious of Frederica? If you think there are more important things I should know, I'd appreciate it if you could explain them to me

The beginning of the season is meant to be a bit confusing. Or at least that’s what I got. It’s going to take some time to answer these questions and I don’t want to spoil anything for you. The first 12-13 episodes is like a set up to the last part of the season. All of your questions will be answered but I’ll say this. Only certain people can leave the sanctuary and only people with a certain blood type can be locked inside. Also the deal with Frederica is justified since she just came to the mansion and gave a mysterious crystal. I’d be more concerned with the trials and Subarus want to keep living and stop his constant dying.

The sanctuary was a place created by Echidna and now supervised by Roswall and is home to demi humans. The reason why everyone is there is because after the witch cult attacked the villagers fled into the sanctuary. It traps people of mixed blood or demi humans in. So basically humans like Subaru and all the villagers can leave except they’re being kept hostage to motivate Emilia in her witch trials in order to liberate the demi humans (though the motive gets kind of vague later). Subaru is suspicious of Frederica because the charm she gave him kind of exploded and caused them to get stuck? <- can’t really remember everything lol. hope this helped a little

After watching an episode you can check out the cut content from Aninews in youtube. It helps in clearing a lot of doubts and by the end of S2 you will understand everything so don't worry. It's set up as a puzzle with bits of information in every loop so follow the dialogue carefully.

Only half-blooded people are locked by the boundaries of the sanctuary, but the people from that village (the ones that evacuated because of the fight against Betelgeuse) were forced to say there.
