| Yes, you need to read the prequel manga as there's a lot of stuffs and references required your knowledge about it, especially in the later chapters where you won't understand anything if you never follow the prequel manga before. Also, Negima was changed into action series like UQ Holder later on after 30-ish chapters so it's not really a SoL series. |
| I'd say that it's not easy to get into at first... But the 2nd half is among my favorite manga ever. It's absolutely worth it, and you'll feel a lot more for a ton of characters this way :) |
