Yeah it's never a problem, I also recommend only reading every 10th page for every book you read, it really makes the pace work, you know?
I probably regret this post by now.

@On_the_Lam, what do you mean "no highs or lows"?
Also what do you mean by "shit talk"?

@On_the_Lam, also just out of curiosity, did you actually end up enjoying Bakemonogatari or are you explaining at the moment why you didn't?
I just have a hard time personally explaining exactly why I'm enjoying the show.
I'm not denying there's flaws, but I don't know, I just find it a really appealing anime.

Have you actually watched it or what now? The hell?

By highs and lows I mean there is nothing much to expect from it. The first episode has the same weight as all the other 14. There is not much else to anticipate or be surprised by like in a traditional series/movie/book/play/game or even a simple essay.

@On_the_Lam, I'm almost done with Bake and I've enjoyed it thus far. That much I can say.
The only reason I haven't watched the next 5 episodes is because I'm following along with another user.
I've already concluded that it's one of the more enjoyable shows that I've watched, and I don't think there could be anything to change my mind on that fact with the little I haven't yet gotten to.
But back to what you said, that's precisely why I was comparing it to the Slice of Life genre.
Not much in the story development department, but it's still pretty entertaining.
But I think you're right in saying it's a bit different than that.
To me, it feels like a series of short stories that revolve around the main character.

But let's end the conversation here since it's going nowhere.
Not sure where you thought it was going in the first place.

In usual SoL you can sort of feel progression. In Bakemonogatari it's as if time is literally stuck.

Essentially that's what it is: short stories that make up one big story around the main character. Some stories even take place around the same time.

The shit talk is not really shit talk though. When I first watched it I thought the same and even if I liked it I found it was pointless. Now that I have seen the bulk of the story thus far I actually went to rewatch a couple of those scenes with the seemingly pointless banter in it and I suddenly realized they weren't pointless at all. They were more like very subtle foreshadowing or fleshing out a character. It is so subtle you need to rewatch the scenes after finishing the entire arc though because they're too subtle to notice otherwise.

@On_the_Lam, Like I said before, to me, it seems like an interesting collection of short stories that revolve around the main character with things like curses and vampires thrown into the mix.
It also has an interesting art style.
The characters aren't really that bad, most of them being pretty likable in my opinion.
Allot of the dialogue-heavy sequences I have found so far are entertaining and relaxing.
Some find those scenes boring, but that's just them.
So that's a much more accurate summary of why I personally like the what I've watched thus far.
Now that all that is out of the way, let's just go our separate ways now and end the conversation.

If it is indeed a collection of short stories then how can there even be any foreshadowing to begin with? There is no overarching plot.

No need to force yourself to watch something you don't think you'll like.

And no, you can't afford to skip arcs in Monogatari. Almost every arc in the first 'season' (Bake, Nise, Neko:Kuro) gets references in Second Season (SS and Hana) and final season (Tsuki, Owari, Koyomi, Owari S2) likes to further reference or conclude arcs. It's borderline impossible to skip any arc.

The short stories build upon eachother and with foreshadowing I meant within one arc. Rewatch the first scene of the Mayoi snail arc for example and pay close attention to what Senjougahara says. If you've completed the arc already you won't get any problem understanding the purpose of the banter.
