I've seen all currently available episodes of Re: Zero, but I don't recall it ever explicitly being mentioned that Subaru is a NEET. I do recall Subaru saying that he "pulled an all-nighter playing video games" right at the beginning of Re: Zero, but that doesn't automatically mean that he's a NEET. I'm assuming I'm wrong, because there is a lot of discussion talking about the reason why Subaru became a NEET, so is there any specific dialogue excerpt that explicitly says or heavily implies that Subaru is a NEET?

If anyone could find an excerpt, that would be greatly appreciated.

He actually does say he's a NEET in the anime. While not explicitly saying, "NEET"; I believe he mentions it early on as to why he's physically fit even though he's always indoors. It's because he considers himself the 'guard' of his home so he needs to be fit if anything were to happen.

Whether that is actually true or not, I don't know; however, he did stay fit while staying in his home.

His hikkimori, which is different NEET. A NEET is someone who not (usually an adult) who doesn't have a job or got to school.

Subaru is still a highschooler, even if he avoids classes.

Whoops, accidentally equated the two in my head. I wasn't aware that Subaru was a high schooler, though.

He actually could not be. He's 18, so he could've finished high school... right? At this point it makes no difference I think. He's already studied and that's it. He still doing school doesn't means anything, as he doesn't even have friends and such.

He basically hasn't mentioned missing his real life at all, not that I remember anyway.. You would think even a "neet" (is that Japanese for basement dweller?) would miss something or want to go back to his world/reality.

Not in Education, Employment or Training. You could have written "neet" in your browser, you'd have found it.

Why would he want to go back to his world?

It's mentioned in the manga and the LN that he's a senior in highschool. His hikkimori status may have been recent though.

Sorry, guys; I thought that the information regarding Subaru's hikikomori status wasn't in the anime because I had skimmed through the episode 0 and 1 and didn't find anything except the allusion when he walks out of the store.

It's been pointed out to me that in episode 0, about 15 minutes in, this dialogue occurs:

Puck: "When I look at you this way, you look pretty well-built."
Subaru: "I do work out every day. For a shut-in who's gotta guard his house, that's a given."

The Japanese checks out too; my really rough approximation:

"mo, jitaku no morobito hikikomori"
「も、自宅の森びと引きこもり」

I'm not even going to try approximating the rest of the Japanese in that sentence to romaji, though.

Point is, he does mention it once off-handedly...and I missed it completely.

Why wouldn't he not want to go back? Being cursed and dying isn't fun at all. Then again, he is mental.

99% of the time he isn't dead. So he enjoys.

Subaru only suffers because he isn't hardened. He's too mentally weak still. But it'll change. I can presume that Wilhelm, for example, went through worse. He wasn't killed, but should've experienced much pain, too. And had people he cared for dying permanently. He had to live on.

Your avatar tells me that you either read or watched no game no life. Which begs the question, do you know that Sora wondered "why in these kind of stories, people want to go back to their homeworld. Why would they even want to go back to such a place?".

The hero in isekai or trapped in game stories who absolutely wants to go home is way too overused and wrong. People immerse themselves so much in these things because they want to flee from their live and their shitty world to begin with. Re:Zero is a special case because Subaru keeps dying painfully and has many hardships, but still, why would he want to go home when he doesn't even know why he is here and how he came there in the first place? And why SHOULD he want to go back if it's to live a life of playing games all day in his room?

To put it quite frankly, whether or not Subaru is a NEET or Hikikomori doesn't matter. Considering the fact that he is able to socialize normally, it tells us that the author has either completely forgotten that Subaru was introduced as a NEET/Hikikomori or the author just doesn't bother anymore.

we can only hope that by the time Subaru's backstory is introduced to us that it'll make sense why someone as energetic as him became a Hikkiomori

While I see your point, a NEET doesn't necessarily have bad social skills. A hikikomori usually has bad social skills with rare exceptions.

But, either way, it's easy enough to blanket bad social skills with an excessive amount of confidence (or more commonly, arrogance), particularly when you have high narcissistic tendencies or are a full-blown narcissist. The most recent episodes seem to say quite a lot about Subaru; even before he was thrust into this new world, he seemed to at least have a high amount of narcissistic tendencies. I mean, the first thing he thinks when he's teleported to another world is: "I'm a hero and I've been transported here to save the day!" While you might want to gloss over that as mere metahumour, I feel that it has deeper meaning to it. If you shine Subaru's actions over the course of the series and particularly his most recent ones and the way his thought processes work in a light of narcissism, Subaru makes a lot more sense as a character.

But that still doesn't make him likeable.
