Manga is 330chapters, no way they can put that in 36episodes... How much did they skip, and how important are those arcs? If any manga reader could answer that would be cool

I've searched through the web and I am shocked by the fact that NO ONE is talking about it.

I read this manga over 10 years ago and has been one of my favorites, when I saw the first episode of Season2, within 5 min in I have became quite irritated - because of the enormous content it's skipped.

============SPOILER DO NOT KEEP READING==============
We all met the youkais from eastern japan (all the good youkais that fought alongside with Ushio). There's also Youkais in western Japan, who want to destroy hakumen and egotistical in their power. In manga, there's a huge arc on the confrontation between them two and awesome duals all over, probably the best arc in manga.

===============END SPOILER======================

So there're more arcs that are missed I believe, but the major one that they cut short makes me extremely unhappy.

If I recall correctly, there was an article where the author of the manga made the decision to cut out most of the story arcs that were unnecessary in order to see the final battle animated. He said that it was purely his choice even if some fans would be saddened that some parts would not be adapted.

If I had to guess the first season adapted 230 chapters and skipped roughly 100 chapters. I assume the season season would adapt what's left but I'm sure there will be some skipping.

@seazn
That's sad :( It's a really good anime, would deserve a full adaptation :/

@Odayama
Well better than not skipping anything, but not seeing the ending, like they continue after s1 left off, and then we get some arc, and never see the ending. So it's better to skip in this case, but still sad :(

Honestly, I praise MAPPA for giving us as much of an adaptation of this as they could. Now a days, you rarely see manga (much less old ass 90's material) get adaptations as long as this. 39 episodes is a lot!

So far I don't really have anything to complain about, I think they are doing a great job!

So far they've skipped:
Chapters 35-38
Chapters 54-74
Chapters 82-84
Chapters 116-138
Chapter 166
Chapter 175-219
Chapter 231-237
Chapter 238-245 (judging by the OP they're just placing this later though)

The Western Bakemono War and The Mist Comes are the most important arcs removed, with the rest being more or less filler. Although I think the character bonds developed over the skipped chapters really do give the finale more impact due to it all getting tied into the the final fight somehow, even if some of them feel a little shoehorned.

Nothing else can really be removed iirc, but it will differ slightly due to what's been cut.

You were right. This arc became episode 3 while chapter 246-260 were adapted into episodes 1 and 2

Some things they skipped were removable anyway, other parts were awesome though (Notably, Mayuko meeting Kirio, and the small tourney between the demons; the two siblings got to show off their most hardcore side)

So..
It's not really necessary to read the skipped chapters, I like the show a lot and all, but it's a hassle to read so far in between chapters.

It sure would be nice if someone mentioned the ultra most important chapters that directly affect the ending, I only have so much free time as many others I'm sure, so that would be very helpful.

As mentioned above, the Western Bakemono War should be the most important one. I am not sure about the chapter no. But I guess it's 175-219, judging by its long length. It introduced the western bakemono leader, the crow bakemono who has been carrying Ushio around in latest anime episodes, the barrier bekemonos Kazuchi, and there was a prelim fight with Hakumen.

The Mist Comes introduced the mist-like tail of Hakumen Ushio just destroyed in the episode yesterday.

Also in yesterday episode Hizaki Mikado attacked Hakumen and made her dropped Tora. In fact in manga it was a ghost ship and its captain. There was a short manga arc about this ghost ship.

There were one or two manga arcs dedicated to Hyou. I remember one of them was him fighting a vampire. In those arcs you could see how much he hated human-eating bakemono and how badly he wanted revenge. These arcs made his fight with Guren much more satisfying.

What's not mentioned in the above "skipped chapter list" was an extra manga volume released after the final battle arc. It featured some short stories including how Tora was pinned to a wall 500 years ago, how Ushio's dad and mom met, and how Hyou recovered after his family was killed. With only 3 episodes left, I don't think the anime would adapt them.
