One of the common trends in discussions regarding this show is the differences between the sub and the dub and how the dub is the far superior version. However, looking at the differences between the two versions, can they technically be still considered the same show?

Personally speaking, they are not. There are way too many differences and in cases like these, they should be considered different shows, with their own individual entries. However, since they are listed as one and the same, I find it scary that many are giving it a free pass on the basis that it's funnier or more entertaining. In my opinion, it shouldn't be an question of which you like better, but whether or not the dub was a good adaptation of the original show... and it isn't.

Putting personal tastes aside, does this mean that any adaptation has free rein to do whatever they want with the source material as long as it fares better in the eyes of the audience? What about those who are looking for an accurate dub of the original? How is this different from the edits, censorship and changes that are made in other notorious dubs like 4kids that fans constantly complain about?

1) I agree absolutely that these should be considered different shows, and that the dubbed version is an unfaithful adaptation. However, the only reason I give this dub a free pass in its adaptation is because the studio that sold ADV films the rights to it gave them a free pass. The dubbers asked about restrictions and the studio didn't care, so long as they bought the rights. I highly doubt that that ADV would have deviated from the script like this, if that wasn't the case.

2) I do not think dubs should deviate from the script that much in general. I find this example a rare exception. I highly doubt a studio would allow this kind of freedom again.

3) An accurate dub was made later.

4) I think the difference between this dub and, say, 4Kids dubs is that, in this dub, they took something that was already bad and tried to make something out of it. Whereas, the 4Kids dubs took something that wasn't necessarily bad and made it into something that coddled the viewers.

That's a lie that ADV told American viewers so that they don't feel too bad about the dub.

The series had good TV ratings, multiple re-runs and multiple DVD releases.
In fact, it had the 7th highest TV ratings in the entire 2000s, beating such popular series like Doraemon, Crayon Shin Chan, Pokemon or One Piece:

The reason they did it (and were allowed to do it) is that everyone knew that a youkai series won't sell in 00's America (in fact, they still don't), and the Japanese preferred getting at least some American money instead of protecting the integrity of their own work.
