I remember Decim making a mistake the last time I watched this. We definitely knew that the wife was reflecting and guilty but the husband didn't even trust her. What a laugh. pretty intense episode tho, it is always nice to see another perspective

Uhh, everyone's horrible in some way, and people don't intentionally turn out the way they do.

The arbiters are authoritarian. Their self-righteousness is repulsive.
The most ethical resolution would making it be the dead soul's choice where they go, reincarnation or the void, regardless of their sins. I figure a number would just be tired and actually choose an eternal rest in the void.

I'd love to see this judgement system turned on its head over time.

It was very interesting to see both perspectives.
Although I would have sent both of them to the void for how much they attempted to play each other

Decim acts like he made a mistake in something like insurance adjusting, but he sent that woman to the "void" and thinks it was a mistakes minutes later. Isn't that pretty bad!?

Well yeah machiko did regret it but cheating is still a cheating, maybe someone can forgive if his/her partner for cheating on them but i really can't forgive if it happened to me, it was like a dead flag sign for me, i rather be alone then be with someone who already cheat on me, i can't say that man is right but having a problem with trusting people is really a complicated thing

so this episode was pretty much the last episode but through a different point of view? interesting. i wonder how the long-haired girl suddenly came into existence, but i'm pretty sure it'll be addressed in the future.

even after the newlywed couple were sent to afterlife, we still get more twists about them. interesting.

i also really like nona so far, she's really fun!

Guess I was right on the first episode thread when I said she hadn't actually cheated and the child was his, unlike the other comments there. I should learn not to be influenced by thoughtless opinions more.

Stuff I wrote for myself when rewatching, thought I'll share anyway in case it might help others clear things up.

Ep 1 & 2
In order to rid of his guilt, Takashi accused Machiko that the child isn’t his because he mistrusted her and eventually killed all three of them as a result. All were his wrong doing.
We are shown a flashback of Machiko in bed with someone else when she confessed. Decim is surprised by this revelation that Machiko is in love with someone else and the baby isn’t Takashi’s, and took that at face value.
Machiko enter the void (hell) with lift with Oni mask and Takashi reincarnates (heaven) lift with white slightly smiling mask.
Decim respect for ppl that lived fulfilled life (Machiko) because she was happy till her death and still tried preserved her love for takashi by trying to make him happy/less sad. He apologized for his misjudgement on Machiko. Decim asked why Machiko actions were incomprehensible and that once dead nothing mattered, Onna explained that it’s love and Machiko tried to preserve it especially after they died because they were going to part ways forever.

Thoughts:
Nona proves to be powerful. Decim proves to be flawed despite his mechanical body language. Onna proves to be insightful despite her “innocence” and naiveté.

Questions:
Places in the purgatory: multiple floors and outside heaven? Arbiters, and who are they? Who is Nona? Onna clearly not an arbiter because of her eyes. Mannequins & the one in the ending? Nona’s book containing the two children.

General world:
Hindu/Buddist statue at the entrance to the lift. The lift then brings to a selected bar.
The game makes no difference to whether they live or not. It’s only used as a tool to test their personality and for the arbiter to pass judgement on the participants. When their life is on the line their darkest nature comes out, by triggering the most primitive emotion of fear. Judgement is passed based on participants’ memories and humanity displayed in the game.
Arbiter takes in all info at the beginning.
@PoLoBreak
You have it backwards
Machiko was sent to the Void, but she went into the Smiling Mask
Takashi was sent to Reincarnate, but he went into the Oni Mask

The second episode of Death Parade had a nice blend of plot twists and character introductions, with the new unnamed character giving good insights on the previous people to be judged. It did a good job on giving a new perspective on the characters. Not much else to say I'd rate it 7/10 as an episode.

After watching 2 episodes I'm already sold on the premise. OP and ED are absolute heat + the character designs are nice.

Decim was left to make a tough call with this couple. Not really sure what the proper read was other than Nona probably being right about the dude's issues. Love how they drop Onna into a pretty brutal first impression of what the arbiters actually do. Looking forward to more good backtracks and interesting plot twists

A nice behind the scenes episode, the one thing that made me disappointed. though was that girl saying "it could have been a one time thing" even if its a one time thing its still cheating and to many thats a unforgivable act.

Not as good as ep. 1, personally hated the fact that the new girl goes and says his judgement was wrong and that since she felt remorse/ it was a one-time thing that makes the cheating okay, it still destroyed the man (mind you I'm not saying he was a Saint, he clearly had extreme trust issues himself and would've needed to work on that heavily had he not died) so personally as cool as the concept is I think ep. 2 did a poor job of "justifying"/ trying to make us feel sorry for the lass.

I've just watched the first two episodes and, 10 years after, here's what I think is Takashi and Machiko timeline:

  • Machiko met Takashi, started dating, he proposed and she accepted. They seem to be very much in love.

  • She gets pregnant quite close to the wedding date (by the time they die, she was 10 weeks pregnant and she saw the test before the wedding).

  • Wedding day comes and Takashi overhears her friends talking about Matchi (Machida Yukio), another friend that is married but having an affair. This is shown to be true as the ending credits of episode 1 show her name on the card.

  • Takashi doesn't ask her about it and just assumes they are talking about Machiko.

  • Takashi becomes very suspicious. One can assume he withdraws and grows quite cold towards Machiko (we can get that from his facial expressions, the way he looks at Machiko, the way he silently rages while she is on the phone late at night).

  • We can speculate about the motivations: change in Takashi attitude so soon after the wedding, pregnancy hormones, confusion about what's going on. But Machiko cheats (my guess is would be with an old acquaintance due to the short timeline).

  • We don't even know if she had sex or not. The guy is looking at his phone without the "I just got some" aura, she is a regretful mess having her "da fuq am I doing" moment. Even if she did had sex, she was already pregnant at this point.

  • We see her not leaving her bed and super depressed. Takashi doesn't seem to care that much.

  • They go on a trip, phone rings and Takashi tries to grab the phone causing them both to have an accident. It wasn't on purpose.

  • They die.

So, they are all wrong. All of them.

  • Decim is only looking at them superficially so he misses a lot.

  • Takashi (and this probably is a bit less weird in Japan) is quite justifiably suspicious of his wife's loyalty but, cowardly, does not talk to her.

  • Machiko (and this is speculation) felt something was off but instead of "hey, we're newlyweds, what the hell is going on" she goes on a date with some rando and ends up in a love hotel. Two idiots fit for each other.

  • Oona gets it mostly right but glosses over the fact that while Takashi becomes colder towards Machiko, Machiko opted to talk to some rando while the rice was still in her hair.

  • Nona thinks Takashi would never be happy because, gasp, he dared be suspicious of his wife when he had good reasons to and, lo and behold, she cheats.

I loved the episodes and for me this could be a stand-alone.
Everybody can, indeed, make mistakes and no one deserved going to hell. And no one is fit to be an arbiter.

Flawed people, flawed arbiters and a flawed judgement.

Fucking depressing and awful…
Court in human world is unfair enough with no super power like this,
yet even after death there’re still going to be the shitty inept judgements in the underworld(?) court??? 😭 😭 😭

I feel pretty confused at the end of that episode at everyone else's reactions to seeing the judgments behind the scenes. My biggest confusion is with how everyone is trying to decide whether Machiko or Takashi was more deserving of being reincarnated.

I'm in agreement with the short woman who seems to be in control of it all, that Takashi didn't seem to be able to trust Machiko at any time of their relationship and would never have been able to be happy. But regardless, even after ALL of that, we saw Takashi's final reaction which was to ATTEMPT TO GOUGE HIS WIFE'S EYES OUT WITH DARTS!!!! How TF can anyone still try to defend him after that?! I'm genuinely baffled by how not a single reviewer of either episodes 1 or 2 seems to be mentioning that, and nearly every single reviewer seems to be supporting Takashi because his wife cheated on him. It's as if everyone is saying that "he made a mistake, he's human", whereas she has to be perfect in every single way.

Don't get me wrong, I will never condone cheating and I believe that cheating is unforgivable - we're left to assume that she cheated willingly and wasn't coerced or forced into it - but if we're comparing cheating vs manslaughter (it was his fault they both died) AND vs attempted murder (when he tried to kill her with darts at the end in a horribly gruesome way), then there is absolutely no comparison as to who is worse here.

We've seen no aggression or violence from Machiko towards anyone except from the little outburst right at the end (which, as was theorised in the show, might've all been an act), but we've seen pretty much continuous hatred, anger, and dark thoughts from Takashi throughout the entire episode, which culminated at the gruesome attempted murder at the end.

The episode itself was very interesting and engaging to watch, but it's left me feeling pretty depressed that the verdict went this way and seemingly won't ever change.

pretty much an expected "twist" if it even be called that. The anime went lengths trying to absolve wifey of doing the deed through one liner counters mixed in with positive reinforcement and the nauseous attitude of hubby. But can i blame him ? Do indefensibleness against being rolled over by a mischevious woman count as a good man ? If she was distraught and seeking forgiveness she would have come clean long ago rather paint a mirage of happy marriage .Leads me to beileve the final confession was for absolvement from the sin than anything else
