Just from the trailer, it's of course still much too early to tell whether the Yuichi Fukuda (Hentai Kamen, Jossy's) directed live-action Gintama movie will be any good. If it's possible to recut the trailer for The Shining into a romantic comedy, it's possible to do anything.
What we can tell from the trailer is that:
-
The CGI...isn't that bad!
Since getting a more extensive look at what the movie has to offer in terms of CGI, i'm definitely getting a better idea of what they were going for. It kind of fits the over-the-top, madcap vibe of the anime.
-
The actors fit their characters
Everyone looks great. Even Elizabeth. My biggest concern was with Oguri Shun as Gintoki. Sure he can play cool, but can he bring the funny? He completely botched it in the Lupin III live-action movie. But, he made a pretty hilarious face running away from whatever he was running away from in the last few seconds of the trailer. Let's hope he can keep that up for the rest of the movie.

It's actually a comedy you guys!
The trailer makes sure we're aware of that near the end. I definitely laughed!

A little bit of everything
It's Gintama, so there's an inherent touch of comedy in the looks of the characters, the costumes, the scenarios. Aside from that, we're treated to a spectacle of action, suspense, mystery, explosions, and all around goofiness.
All in all, unless someone has major issues with any of the casting, Gintama fans should be able to breathe a little easier until the movie's release date on July 14, 2017.
