Existentialism rejects the idea that lives are logical and follow consistent rules.  Anime, with its reality-bending and frequently surreal scenes and transitions, is a perfect medium for existential work.

Anime such as Excel Saga, FLCL, Lain, .hack//SIGN, and the beginning of Tsukihime contain existential themes. The disjointed sequence of battle in Neon Genesis Evangelion is an excellent example of an existential treatment of the subject of war.
