I guess it depends on whether you're interested in ABe's writing or his art. I think the only works he actually wrote were Haibane Renmei, NieA_7, Ryushika Ryushika, Kaira and a couple of doujinshi. For all the other works he only did art.
For the general vibe, I'd recommend you check some of the stuff from Nakamura and Konaka, both of whom he used to work with a lot.

For direct recommendations with that in mind: Kino no Tabi (the old one), Shinreigari, RahXephon might be a good start.

I’d like his works a lot. I think he was involved in working with Texhnolyze? If yes then that’s my probably favourite work from him. I’d also like to read some of his other works but I don’t know where I can read it or buy it (books like Despera or Phenomeno). I don’t think this club is active and is pretty dead but nonetheless I’d like if people recommended some animes or mangas that are similar to his work. Nonetheless I love Yoshitoshi Abe and his works. :)

Aaaah, bless his work...I've been starting to collect his art books as of late, literally have been trying to get as much merch as I can get my hands on (within financial reasons.)

Honestly don't even have a favorite show of his, they're all wonderful in their own rights.

Also, c'mon people, more talk! More worshipping our eye candy god, Yoshitoshi ABe! `^´

I would join just this group just because Abe created the masterpiece that is Serial Experiments Lain (my favourite anime) .. but then I discovered Haibane Renmei which was great, and I have heard Texhnolyse is a great series as well. Yoshitoshi Abe is really amazing.

Hello Reine, welcome! But it`s dead club, unfortunately.

The only thing ABe ever did for me is left me wanting more.

ABe at work, using an iPad. Took him less than four minutes to make that drawing. 0.0

yeah... still nice though .. I managed to find it as low as $230 .. but still more than I'm willing as well .. wouldn't blink an eye if it was under $150 though ;-)

I'm not willing to pay that much for an UPSCALE.

Well, Animage said they were going to have a year's worth of Despera spreads in their magazine before the series was released. The first one was in their July 2009 issue, I believe, which means the last one will be in their June or July 2010 issue. After that, any season is fair game for the anime release, so it could be as early as Fall (or even Summer, but probably not) 2010. I'll give them however long it takes to do it right, though.

Texhnolyze is only 60 bucks on rightstuf now? When I got my copy it was hard to find one for less than 150. I did, but it took a lot of searching.

So when in the hell is Despera coming out? Wasn't it announced like 9 months ago?

tranceotaku | Apr 4, 2010 3:14 AM
I want Texhnolyze on dvd real bad. It seems that the only place that has the complete is rightstuf. That was tax returns are for I guess.

I disliked NieA_7 for its lack of plot. I know it's slice-of-life, but even in Aria there is more action.

I'm going to rewatch all his works someday, so maybe my opinion about NieA_7 will change.

Texhnolyze is very, VERY dark and very VERY heavy. If you can handle that, it's one of the best anime series ever created. Haibane Renmei's still my favorite, but Texhnolyze is excellent. It's more similar to Lain than Haibane or NieA in terms of tone. Even more so than for other ABe series (none of which have been rescued by licensors), DVDs are very hard to come by, but if you can get ahold of it, on DVD or otherwise, it's well worth the watch.

I hope that Despera can somehow manage to beat the odds and get licensed. I'd love to have a complete ABe DVD collection.
