Kaoru appears in episode 10, in Momoe's dream. When questioned about the way he presented himself, Kaoru admits that he was assigned female at birth, but identifies as male and uses male pronouns. He has a good rapport with Momoe, with both of them validating each other's feelings.
Struggling with his gender identity, Kaoru went to his kendo coach to ask for advice. However, the coach — who'd been harboring a secret, possessive obsession towards Kaoru — took this as a personal offense and forced himself onto him. The assault resulted in pregnancy, which led to Kaoru's suicide.
