List of Anime Re-releases That Reused UPCs

Blog Index

Sometimes in later printings of a release, companies opt to alter the cover, packaging, or contents of the disc(s), while reusing the UPC, which is a rather annoying practice. This will list anime releases which should have gotten a new UPC to reflect a significant change in the release, but didn't.

ADV Films
Battle Angel - Later printings of this release had a different front cover, and in 2008, it was reprinted with the same front cover as the later printings, but with only the ADV Films logo and no DVD logo in the bottom right corner. The back cover also had minor alterations with "Packaging Design © 2008 A.D. Vision, Inc." on the copyright, and the disc art has no inner ring and there's no advertisement insert.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Collection 0:1 - Originally released on 5/16/2000, a re-release with a slightly different front cover and completely different back cover known as the "remastered" version came out on 12/24/2001.

AnimEigo
Bubblegum Crisis [Collector's Edition] - There are 2 variants of this release, one with a group shot cover, and another with just a single character. The other has a flap that can be opened similar to FUNimation's Evangelion 2.22 release.
Bubblegum Crisis - Remastered Edition - Later printings of this release come in a single DVD case instead of a slipbox with the four remastered DVD singles.

.hack//SIGN - Complete Collection [Anime Legends] - Early printings of this release came in a digipak in a slipcover while later printings came in a standard DVD case with a different front cover.
s-CRY-ed - Complete Collection [Anime Legends] - Early printings of this release came in a digipak in a slipcover while later printings came in a standard DVD case.

Buena Vista / Disney
Princess Mononoke - Originally released on 12/19/2000, it was sometime reprinted in 2012 with the same UPC, but the cover art was updated to the blue bordering that other Studio Ghibli DVDs had from that time period. The disc art was changed from solid silver and text to color matching the cover, and the insert was changed as well.

Central Park Media
Harlock Saga - This was re-released on 4/26/2005 with a different cover.
Harmagedon - 20th Anniversary Collector's Series - This was re-released on 1/25/2005 with a different cover.
RG Veda - There are 2 variants of this release, one with a red cover, and another with a gold cover.
The Humanoid - This was re-released on 4/26/2005 with a different cover.

Critical Mass Video
Bondage Mansion - Originally released on 3/26/2002 with a warning banner cover, it was later reprinted with a slightly different cover.
Campus - Originally released on 10/30/2002 with a warning banner cover, it was later reprinted with a slightly different cover.
Mail Order Maiden 28 - Originally released on 4/24/2001 with a solid background cover, it was later reprinted with a slightly different cover with a background of two people on a bench.
MeiKing - Originally released on 9/10/2002 with a warning banner cover, it was later reprinted with an entirely different cover .

Discotek Media
DearS - Complete Collection - Originally released 5/27/2014, it was later reprinted with a different front cover that used "Complete Series" instead.
Fist of the North Star: The Movie - Originally released 5/19/2009, it later received a silent re-release with a new cover to fix problems with the subtitles.

FUNimation Entertainment
Aquarion - The Complete Series [S.A.V.E.] - Originally this release had a S.A.V.E. sticker over thinpak packaging, later re-released on 11/2/2010 in a standard DVD case with a S.A.V.E. banner. This is the only S.A.V.E. title to change the packaging configuration from a thinpak to a DVD case.
Baccano! - The Complete Series - Release rebranded as Anime Classics sometime in 2012. Only alterations to the artwork were to the spine and slipcover.
Baldr Force EXE - Release was rebranded as S.A.V.E. on 5/18/2010, and later printings changed the cover to have the standard S.A.V.E. green banner.
Blade of the Phantom Master - Release was rebranded as S.A.V.E. on 4/27/2010, and later printings changed the cover to have the standard S.A.V.E. green banner.
Dragon Ball - Movie Box [Movies 2-4] - There are 2 variants of the thinpak release. The first has the specs and UPC on the bottom of the box, while the other has the UPC and specs on the back with an ISBN.
Dragon Ball Z - Broly Triple Threat - There are 2 variants of the thinpak release, one with this cover as the front, and another with this cover as the front. The other image is the back for both. The one with Broly having purple hair has the specs and UPC on the back with an ISBN, while the one with Broly having gold hair has all the specs and UPC on the bottom without an ISBN.
Dragon Ball Z - Volume 19: Captain Ginyu - Double Cross - Later printings of this release feature a change in disc art that matches the front cover rather than having just Captain Ginyu.
Dragon Ball Z - Volume 21: Frieza - Transformation - This DVD was re-released sometime in 2008 with completely different menus and changes to the subtitle font.
Dragon Ball Z - Volume 33: Trunks - Mysterious Youth - Originally released 9/26/2000, it was re-released on 2/5/2002 with some alterations to the front cover (a smaller "2 versions" splash in the bottom right corner, a title font more consistent with the original volumes), changing the copyright on the back from 2000 to 2002, and fixing errors the original release had.
Dragon Ball Z - Volume 34: Trunks - Prelude to Terror - Originally released 9/26/2000, it was re-released on 2/5/2002 with some alterations to the front cover (a smaller "2 versions" splash in the bottom right corner, a title font more consistent with the original volumes), changing the copyright on the back from 2000 to 2002, and fixing errors the original release had. The most significant change is that the re-release contained episodes 106-110 (edited dub count) instead of just 106-108. This was the result of Volume 35: Z Warriors Prepare being cancelled, with this resulting in Prelude to Terror becoming Volume 34/35.
Evangelion 1.11 Blu-ray/Evangelion 1.11 DVD - FUNimation removed the Fly Me to the Moon extras from the later print runs, and not long after, the later print runs came in standard Blu-ray/DVD cases with a slipcover as opposed to a shiny digipak in a shiny slipbox.
Ouran High School Host Club - The Complete Series - Release has two different slipboxes. One is the same as the Blu-ray release, while the other is in color.
Sasami: Magical Girls Club - Season 1 - Release was rebranded as S.A.V.E. on 8/10/2010, and later printings changed the cover to have the standard S.A.V.E. green banner.
Sasami: Magical Girls Club - Season 2 - Release was rebranded as S.A.V.E. on 8/10/2010, and later printings changed the cover to have the standard S.A.V.E. green banner.
School Rumble: First Semester [Viridian Collection] - Release was rebranded as S.A.V.E. on 6/15/2010, and later printings changed the cover to have the standard S.A.V.E. green banner. It was subsequently replaced in March 2015 by a new S.A.V.E. release, but with the video extras disc from the prior releases dropped.
Shiki - The Complete Series - Like with Shangri-la, the first printing was taking unsold stock of both parts and putting them in the Limited Edition artbox with an info sheet glued to the back. However, unlike Shangri-la, when the repackaged stock ran out, it didn't receive a new UPC and later printings came in a standard Blu-ray case.
Venus Versus Virus - The Complete Series - Release was rebranded as S.A.V.E. on 5/18/2010, and later printings changed the cover to have the standard S.A.V.E. green banner.

Bible Black: New Testament - Volume 2: Second Sacrament - Early printings of this release contained episodes 1-4, with episodes 1-2 being subbed-only. It was later re-released with only episodes 3-4.

Ghost in the Shell: Special Edition - Originally released in a digipak with a slipcover and poster, sometime in 2017, this was re-released in a 2-disc eco-DVD case with the SKU changed from M2004 to MG23195.

Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko - Originally released on 10/9/2001, sometime in 2003 this release was reprinted with different cover art and "The Perfect Collection" branding dropped.

List of ADV Films AniMini DVDs and Central Park Media Anime Test Drive DVDs

This is a list of AniMini DVDs from ADV Films and Central Park Media's Anime Test Drive DVDs. AniMini DVDs were something ADV Films put out in 2004 in three separate batches which contained one episode of anime for $6.98 with only the English audio on a mini DVD. A coupon code was included that could be used towards the purchase of a complete DVD for that series. Likewise, Central Park Media had a similar idea, they had Anime Test Drive DVDs which included two episodes of anime and included rebate codes that could be used towards the purchase of a full box set.

In 2017 the North American anime industry began to go Blu-ray-only. For some that were still collecting various shows on DVD, this meant that they later would have incomplete shelves. This list will include many of these titles, including certain titles that went from having a DVD-only SKU to being combo packs only.

Baki: The Grappler: The original series was released DVD-only while the new anime is Blu-ray-only.
Basilisk: The first season got DVD-only SKUs while S2 was released as a combo pack.
Bananya: Season 1 got a DVD-only SKU while S2 went Blu-ray-only.
Beyond the Boundary: The TV series got a DVD while the movies got a combo pack.
Blade of the Immortal: The original anime is DVD-only while the remake is Blu-ray-only.
Case Closed: The first 6 movies got DVD-only SKUs, all other movies have since been Blu-ray-only.
Chihayafuru: Seasons 1-2 got DVD-only SKUs while S3 went Blu-ray-only.
City Hunter: The City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes got a Blu-ray-only SKU but no DVDs when the prior entries had them.
Cutey Honey: Cutey Honey Universe was released Blu-ray-only while Cutey Honey and New Cutey Honey had DVD-only SKUs.
Dororo: The original anime was released DVD-only while the 2019 anime is Blu-ray-only.
Eureka Seven: The Hi-Evolution movies are combo-pack-only when the original series and Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers movie got DVD-only SKUs.
Fafner: The movie got a combo pack when the prior entries were originally DVD-only.
Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya: Seasons 1-3 got DVD-only SKUs while Prisma Phantasm and Vow in the Snow went Blu-ray-only along with subsequent entries.
Fate/stay night: Fate/Zero, Fate/stay night, Unlimited Blade Works (movie and TV remake) got DVD-only SKUs while Heaven's Feel and subsequent entries in the Fate franchise have gone Blu-ray-only.
Food Wars!: Seasons 1-3 got DVD-only SKUs, the DVDs are now exclusive to the Limited Edition combo packs.
Free!: Season 1 received a DVD-only SKU from Discotek Media while the rest of the franchise received combo packs from FUNimation (now Crunchyroll, LLC) up until the Road to the World: The Dream movie which is Blu-ray-only.
Girls und Panzer: The TV series and OVA specials got DVDs, while the Anzio OVA and movie got combo packs and subsequent entries have since gone Blu-ray-only.
Gundam Build Fighters: Seasons 1 and 2 were released on DVD while subsequent entries are Blu-ray-only.
Haikyu!!: The first 3 seasons got DVD-only SKUs while Season 4 is Blu-ray-only.
Hetalia: Seasons 1-6 and the movie were released only on DVD while Season 7 is Blu-ray-only.
Hidamari Sketch: The entire series was released on DVD except for Sae & Hiro Graduation.
Himouto! Umaru-chan: Season 1 was released on DVD while Season 2 is Blu-ray-only.
How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord: Season 1 had combo packs while season 2 is Blu-ray-only.
Is it Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?: Season 1 and the Arrow of Orion movie received DVD-only SKUs while S2 and on went Blu-ray-only. The DVDs for S2 were exclusive to the Limited Edition combo pack.
Kinmoza!: Seasons 1-2 got DVD-only SKUs while the Pretty Days OVA and Thank You!! movie were released Blu-ray-only.
Log Horizon: Seasons 1-2 got DVD-only SKUs through Sentai Filmworks, while Season 3 received a Blu-ray-only release from FUNimation.
Love Live!: The original series and movie were Blu-ray-only through NISA while Sunshine received combo packs from FUNimation. Subsequent entries under Crunchyrolll, LLC are now Blu-ray-only.
Love, Chunibyo, and Other Delusions!: Seasons 1-2 got DVDs while the movies got combo packs.
Lupin III: Parts 1-2 were released on DVD, while Parts 3, 5, and 6 were released Blu-ray-only. Part 4 was released dubbed-only on DVD, while the Japanese version was released only on Blu-ray. Many of the specials have since been released Blu-ray-only.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: The original OVA series is DVD-only while the TV series went Blu-ray-only starting with Golden Wind.
Kingdom: Seasons 1 and 2 were DVD-only while Season 3 is Blu-ray-only.
Kino's Jouney: The remake is Blu-ray-only unlike the original series.
Knights of Sidonia: The first two TV seasons got separate Blu-ray and DVD SKUs, while the Love Woven in the Stars movie is Blu-ray-only.
Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid: Season 1 received a combo pack release while season 2 is Blu-ray-only.
Megalobox: Season 1 had a DVD-only SKU while Season 2 is Blu-ray-only.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin: Episodes 5-6 are Blu-ray-only.
My Hero Academia: Seasons 1-3 got DVD-only SKUs with S1-S2 being Walmart-exclusives. Two Heroes got a DVD-only SKU.
My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU: Seasons 1-2 got DVDs while Season 3 is Blu-ray-only.

Phantasy Star Online 2: The Animation: The original had a DVD-only SKU while Episode Oracle went Blu-ray-only.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The original series and movies got DVD-only SKUs, while the Magia Record spin-off and subsequent entries went Blu-ray-only.
Sakura Wars: The original anime entries got DVD-only SKUs while the 2020 anime is Blu-ray-only.
Sengoku Basara: Season 1 received a DVD-only SKU, then got re-released onto a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, and subsequent entries have been combo pack only. Additionally, the Gakuen Basara spin-off series was released Blu-ray-only.
Shakugan no Shana: Season 1 was released on DVD, while the rest of the franchise was released only in combo packs.
Sorcerous Stabber Orphen: The original series got DVDs while the remake is Blu-ray-only.
Space Brothers: The TV series was released on both Blu-ray and DVD while Space Brothers #0 was released Blu-ray-only.
Strike Witches: Season 1 received a DVD-only SKU, then got re-released onto a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, S2 had a combo pack, Brave Witches had a combo pack, and subsequent entries have since been Blu-ray-only.
Sword Art Online: Seasons 1-2 and Ordinal Scale got DVD-only SKUs, while every installment since has been Blu-ray-only.
The Garden of Sinners: Movies 1-7 got DVDs while movie 8 is Blu-ray-only.
The Quintessential Quintuplets: Season 1 got a combo pack release while Season 2 is Blu-ray-only.
When They Cry: The original series got DVD-only SKUs, Gou went Blu-ray-only.
Zombie Land Saga: The DVDs for season 1 were exclusive to the Limited Edition while season 2 got a regular edition Blu-ray-only release.

Sometimes, Sentai Filmworks and Maiden Japan have made mistakes with their credit rolls, this will list them to also allow further clarification.

Angelic Layer - Complete Collection (Blu-ray) - ADV Films is mistakenly credited for ADR Production instead of Industrial Smoke & Mirrors, which was ADV Films' primary recording studio during the original DVD release.
Azumanga Daioh - Complete Collection (Sentai Selects) - ADV Films is mistakenly credited for ADR Production instead of Industrial Smoke & Mirrors, which was ADV Films' primary recording studio during the original DVD release.
Battle Programmer Shirase - Complete Collection - Sentai Filmworks was mistakenly credited instead of Maiden Japan, along with John Ledford for "Executive Producer" and "Producer", and Griffin Vance for "Producer".
Blue Drop - The Complete Collection (Dubbed DVD) - Janice Williams was accidentally credited as the ADR Director for episodes 5-13.
Di Gi Charat - The Complete TV Series - David Williams was credited for "BD Authoring" for what is a DVD-only release.
Divergence Eve - Complete Collection (Sentai DVD) - Carl Macek is credited as the ADR Director on the back cover despite him directing only episodes 1-9 of season 1, with Sandra Krasa directing episodes 10-13, and Scott McClennen directing season 2 (Misaki Chronicles).
ef: A Tale of Memories - Stanley Thomas who was an audio engineer for 2 episodes isn't credited on the 2014 and 2020 releases.
Hayate the Combat Butler Season 1 - Joel McCray is credited for just "BD Authoring" on the DVD version.
Hayate the Combat Butler: Can't Take My Eyes Off You - Joel McCray is credited for just "BD Authoring" on the DVD version.
Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere - Complete Collection (Blu-ray/DVD) - The 2016 complete collection release credited Cesar Inserny for "Audio Engineer" on all of the episodes despite working only on season 1, with season 2 having three different audio engineers.
Kämpfer - Complete Collection (2019 Blu-ray) - Ian Fagen was accidentally credited as "Project Translator" for Kämpfer für die Liebe instead of Neil Nadelman, and was supposed to be credited for "Supervising Translator" as he further tweaked the subs from the prior releases.
Kanamemo - Complete Collection - Sentai Filmworks was mistakenly credited instead of Maiden Japan, along with John Ledford for "Executive Producer" and "Producer", and Griffin Vance for "Producer".
Natsu no Arashi! - Complete Collection - John Ledford was mistakenly credited for "Executive Producer" and "Producer" while Griffin Vance was mistakenly credited for "Producer" when they're never credited that way in any Maiden Japan release as Maiden Japan is Matt Greenfield's company, not John Ledford's.
Outburst Dreamer Boys HIDIVE Simulcast Credits - Jake Jung was accidentally credited for "Project Translator" instead of Sawa Savage. This mistake was rectified after Sentai was notified about it. The mistake occurred as he was offered to translate the series, but he declined and chose to translate Assassin's Pride instead.
Sasami-san@Ganbaranai - Complete Collection (DVD) - Nick Lee is credited for "BD & DVD Authoring" despite the fact the Blu-ray wouldn't release until the next year, and would be authored by Joel McCray. Additionally, Kaoru Bertrand for whatever reason was not credited for "Project Translator" despite being credited on the Anime Network Online simulcast of the series.
Sasami-san@Ganbaranai - Complete Collection (Blu-ray) - Kaoru Bertrand for whatever reason was not credited for "Project Translator" on the Blu-ray release either despite being credited on the Anime Network Online simulcast of the series.
Tamako Market - Complete Collection (Blu-ray) - Javier Lopez for whatever reason was not credited for "Project Translator" on the Blu-ray release despite being credited on the DVD release of the series.
The World God Only Knows - Complete Collection - Janice Williams was accidentally credited for "ADR Director" instead of Steven Foster.
This Art Club Has a Problem! - Complete Collection - Sentai Filmworks was mistakenly credited instead of Maiden Japan, along with John Ledford for "Executive Producer" and "Producer", and Griffin Vance for "Producer".

List of Section23 Films Releases That Reused Discs/Other Companies Making New Discs

Most home video companies when they re-release things typically re-use discs as it's cheaper than making new ones, but Sentai Filmworks and Maiden Japan are an exception, with this practice going back to ADV Films. ADV Films typically made new discs for their complete collections to strip out the video extras from the singles to give them more value as the singles paid the bills, though there were some series where they didn't do that. These new discs wouldn't have redone credits however, only the disc credits in the special features would be different. If a complete collection had the video extras, with a handful of exceptions, it was re-using the original singles discs, or in the case of Martian Successor Nadesico, the Essential Anime Collection discs. If a show with the extras stripped out got another complete set with the exact same disc count as before and still no extras, it would reuse the prior complete set's discs. This will list the rare instances of Sentai Filmworks and Maiden Japan re-using discs, as well as the few instances other companies made new discs.

ADV Films Post-2009 Reused Discs
Elfen Lied - Complete Collection (2021) - Reuses 2019 Collector's Edition [SteelBook] discs.
UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie - The Ultramaiden Collection - Reuses 2009 Ultramaiden Collection discs. Only thing different is the UPC, even the copyright on the cover art is still put down as 2009 on the 2012 release.

Sentai Filmworks Reused Discs
A Little Snow Fair Sugar - Complete Collection [Sentai Selects] - Reuses Collection 1 and Collection 2 discs.
Rozen Maiden - Complete Collection [Sentai Selects] - Reuses 2011 Complete Collection discs.
Sakura Wars - Complete Collection [Sentai Selects] - Reuses 2009 Complete Collection discs.
The Big O - 20th Anniversary Edition [SteelBook] - Reuses 2017 Complete Collection discs.

Reused Credits
These are series where new discs were made, but the credits from the prior release(s) were reused.

Armored Trooper Votoms - Complete Collection - Reuses the credits from the 3 individual releases.
Den-noh Coil - Complete Collection - Reuses 2016 credits.
Gatchaman [Collector's Edition] - Reuses original credits from TV series, OVA, and movie releases.
Gatchaman Crowds - Complete Series - Reuses Gatchaman Crowds and Gatchaman Crowds Insight Complete Collection credits.
Kino's Journey - Complete Collection (SDBD) - Reuses 2017 Complete Collection credits and is essentially a literal port of that release as indicated by the usage of "this DVD" and not "this disc" for the opening disclaimer.
K-On! [Limited Edition] - Reuses original credits from the season 1, season 2, and movie releases.
La Corda d'Oro: Primo Passo - Complete Collection - Reuses 2010 credits.
Patlabor: The Mobile Police - Complete Collection [Special Edition] - Reuses the credits from the individual releases. Additionally, the 2020 set is a repackaging of the 2018 discs inside a slipcover as opposed to a shiny slipbox.
Royal Space Force (2019) - Reuses original 2013 credits.

Other Companies Making New Discs
Here are the instances of other companies making new discs beyond the obvious cases where there were recalls/replacement programs and disc counts were changed, like with FUNimation re-releasing shows originally released in singles in box sets with less discs and dropping the alternate angles, thus improving video quality.

Bandai Entertainment
My-Hime [Anime Legends] - Volumes 1-4 of the original singles were authored by The Ocean Group, but DVD authoring was switched over to SpeeDVD for Volumes 5-7 after complaints of Volumes 1-4 not working on many people's DVD players. Volumes 1-4 were reauthored by SpeeDVD for the Anime Legends set, with Volumes 5-7 remaining the same, and thus, reused. This can be seen with the DVD menus.

FUNimation
Blue Gender - The Complete Series [Anime Classics] - In addition to the TV series being on new discs with the disc count reduced from 8 to 4 and dropping the alternate-angles, the included disc for Blue Gender: The Warrior is new and is not the same disc as the original release.
Evangelion 1.11 Blu-ray/Evangelion 1.11 DVD - FUNimation removed the Fly Me to the Moon extras from the later print runs, and not long after, the later print runs came in standard Blu-ray/DVD cases with a slipcover as opposed to a shiny digipak in a shiny slipbox.
Fruits Basket - The Complete Series [Collector's Edition] - The 2011 DVD CE had the extras from the singles DVDs moved to a new 5th disc. This 5th disc was unfortunately not included in the 2014 Anime Classics DVD release.
Rosario + Vampire / Rosario + Vampire Capu2 - The Complete Series - The included DVDs in the combo pack are NOT the original 2011 release discs, but instead completely brand new ones.
Samurai Champloo - The Complete Series [Anime Classics] - The prior release which was FUNimation distributing for Geneon had complaints about the quality of the upscale not being great. This led to FUNimation making new discs for the Anime Classics release.
Sankarea - The Complete Series (2015) - The original 2013 release accidentally used the TV broadcast masters and this mistake was fixed with the 2015 release.
Summer Wars [The Hosoda Collection]
The Boy and the Beast [The Hosoda Collection]
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time [The Hosoda Collection] - Uses different menus from the regular edition, but should otherwise be identical.
Trigun - The Complete Series [Anime Classics] - The 2010 release repeated Geneon's initial mistake of using Episode 1's opening on every episode. This mistake was rectified on the Anime Classics set.
