This will be an index of links to Easter Egg info from Anime News Network's Encyclopedia so this info is a bit easier to find. Currently to find this info on ANN you have to go directly to the Encyclopedia entry, there is no index. If you spot any ANN Encyclopedia entries with them that are not on here, please let me know so I can add them.

Translations for anime are one of the most important things when it comes to those that don't speak Japanese. Believe it or not, you can really mess up translations, and what might not seem like a big deal can drastically alter the meaning of a scene. Below are official translation fails to show this, and to bring more awareness to how much translations matter. If you have any fails not on here, feel free to mention them so I can add them to this list.

Note: Some of the following may have been fixed on the home video release, later on, or a later home video release. Ex: No-Rin Before | After

Also, if you like seeing how some other translation fails...

Unfortunately many times when a company rescues an anime series, they won't get prior extras, or sometimes one format gets the extras, but the other doesn't, or lastly there was a new release that included more extras that a prior release didn't have. This list is to cover those cases with R1 anime releases. This list will only include extras on DVD and Blu-ray releases, not VHS or Laserdisc. I may include those in the future. If you're aware of anything not on here, please let me know so I can add it. This is to help people figure out if they've got all the extras for a show or not.

Fandom Post Version

Notes
  • Whenever ADV Films would do a box set release, they usually would strip the show of extras to make the singles more appealing and to prevent the "I'll wait for the box set." mentality that leads to less money. For a list of those with extras, see this thread.
  • For stuff in a franchise never released before, see this thread.
  • At this time this thread will only be about DVD and Blu-ray releases, not VHS or laserdisc, the latter of which is harder to find info on as ANN's encyclopedia doesn't have those releases. I may include those in the future.
  • This thread will also include notable missing inserts (mainly in regards to cases where it's not obvious like with singles as opposed to say NISA Premium Editions vs. Standard Editions), not just video extras, but the focus is mainly on video extras and DVD Easter Eggs.
  • Links in this thread will take you to the ANN entry for the show (this is so people know exactly what releases a show has that I'm referring to), and in some cases the actual extras being referred to.

Please point out any errors or omissions so I can add them to the list. This is still very much a work in-progress, especially as far as the ADV Films shows are concerned.

Blog Index | Aniplex License Status List Main | JP vs. US Release Timeframes

This is meant to show what Aniplex's track record is in regards to legal streaming and where their stuff can be legally streamed. One thing you will quickly notice, particularly once you look at the bottom is that their track record of streaming catalog titles is abysmal. They do at least have a very good track record with current titles however. If you can't "afford" Aniplex USA's expensive releases, then you very well can at least legally stream them most of the time.

Last updated: 2/5/2017 | Last changes: Noted Sekirei and Sekirei: Pure Engagement as OOP (Expired on 2/9/2017), noted FMA:B is back on Hulu (via Aniplex USA).

Edit 10/13/2016
I'm no longer going to be updating the table below (Last update was 5/21/2016 after I added the Madoka Blu-ray Box and Doukyusei Classmates) after maybe one more update or two. I'll leave it up (despite how messy it looks) so people can still see how long it generally takes for an Aniplex title to come out, and whether or not a show might not receive a release.

Aniplex's release timeframe has come under criticism recently, so I decided to figure out how they've changed over the years. Here's the timeframes.

Last updated: 11/23/2016

Note: I will update this every once in a while, updates will be very random. This is a list that will take a very long time to compile. If you're curious about a show that's not on this list, look at AllCinema, the anime's official website (Link can be found on ANN in the anime's encyclopedia entry, sometimes you need to use the Internet Archive for older sites), or Yahoo! Auctions Japan (For packaging shots), and compare it to the info in the ANN encyclopedia, RightStuf listing, etc..
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Many times extras in the Japanese release of a show will fail to make it to the R1 release. This is a list for such JP extras that aren't on the R1 release.

Generally missing extras
-Booklets: I've compiled a list of R1 releases with booklets on here that include content from the JP release (Booklets/inserts with just episode summaries and/or art only that weren't adapted from the JP booklets won't be included). If any pages are missing to my knowledge (particularly when it comes to Aniplex USA releases), I'll note that. Note: Not all Japanese releases come with a booklet. Also, sometimes ADV Films would take this content and put it on the actual discs instead of making physical booklets, like so.
-Other physical extras: Things like end cards and the like are a rather rare sight in R1 since the dawn of the 2010's. This list will not list such things.
-Drama CDs and soundtrack CDs: These have always been a rarity to see included in anime releases, like with booklets I'll also have a list below of R1 releases that included these. Note: Not all Japanese releases come with a drama CD and/ or soundtrack CD.
-Japanese commentaries: These are an extremely rare sight due to a variety of reasons. I've also got a list with R1 releases that have managed to include these.

Recently many Aniplex titles have been expiring for whatever reason (Aniplex charging too much, not allowing anyone to license/rescue titles, series didn't sell well enough to justify a renewal, etc.), so I decided to list the status of every title that is handled by Aniplex internationally, whether it be in-print, OOP, or simply never licensed. I've provided alternative English-friendly options for OOP titles in the OOP list, as well as unreleased titles and titles not released in a certain format by Aniplex USA. I've also provided the date of the final JPBD for titles AoA never released and titles that are still TBD. Lastly, each of the links for a title takes you to the ANN encyclopedia entry where you can see all the various releases for a title, like so. Feel free to point out anything missing or any errors. I will be consistently updating this list.

Notes
-(???) means I'm not sure if it was handled internationally by Aniplex. Ex: Zakuro is OOP, but Crunchyroll got streaming rights from ADK, not Aniplex, though NISA may have had to go to Aniplex or possibly both ADK and Aniplex (shared rights do sometimes happen Ex: Love Hina (Production I.G, Starchild), Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing (flying dog, Gonzo)) to get home video rights.
-Some English-friendly alternatives for OOP/unreleased titles require getting a region-free/different region Blu-ray or DVD player. Also, Japan shares the same Blu-ray region as North America, Region A, and JP anime BDs rarely have region-coding on them, so they should work regardless of your region. Also with DVDs in other regions, I will note if they're PAL (Meaning they'll have PAL speedup) or NTSC. Regions guide: United Kingdom=Region 2 (DVD), B (Blu-ray) | Australia=Region 4 (DVD), B (Blu-ray)
-Regarding the Monogatari Series: While these lists are in alphabetical order, I decided with the Monogatari Series to list everything below Bakemonogatari in production order.
-Madman, Siren Visual, and Hanabee=Australia. Hanabee does not ship outside Australia and New Zealand, so you'll have to find other ways to obtain their releases if you're not in Australia or New Zealand.
-Aniplex USA has stated before they have no interest in catalog titles, so any catalog titles are unlikely to be picked up by them. Aniplex USA's only license-rescues were Gurren Lagann, Read or Die, and the Rurouni Kenshin OVAs and the movie. These were done only due to recent or upcoming Blu-ray releases in Japan for titles that were previously DVD-only in Japan. The Rurouni Kenshin OVAs and the movie were imports-only and Read or Die was Blu-ray-only (the TV series DVDs have been OOP since Geneon's closure in late 2007, the DVD for the OVA from Manga going OOP around the same time).
-When an Aniplex series from another company expired, streaming only came back for titles already streaming on CR, the publisher just switching to Aniplex. The only exceptions so far have been Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa which were streaming in FUNimation's usual places until their licenses expired, with AoA later getting streaming rights and putting them on Crunchyroll.
-Aniplex Japan now works exclusively with their US subsidiary (there's tons of evidence to suggest this), Aniplex of America. If AoA does not grab an Aniplex series, it'll remain OOP or unlicensed.

Other Lists: Aniplex Hulu Expiration Dates* (Via WTK of The Fandom Post) | Aniplex North America Streaming List | JP vs. US Release Timeframes

*Many of these are no longer on Hulu. However, the dates are still relevant as the license expiration dates matched the Hulu expirations.

Last updated: 2/28/2017 | Last changes: Noted Sekirei and Sekirei: Pure Engagement as OOP and Madman releases of Classroom Crisis and Gunslinger Stratos, two unreleased Aniplex USA titles.

Based off the Hulu expiration dates, the licenses last 6-7 years after the first release hits, so these titles will likely expire in 2016 and 2017.

Blog Index

This will be an index of issues with R1 anime releases over the years. Note that this will list only issues with DVDs and Blu-rays, and not VHS and Laserdisc releases. Links will be provided whenever possible. If you're aware of an issue not on this list, please bring it up so I can add it! I'm doing this so people can easily find these issues, and newer fans are made aware of these should they choose to buy any affected release.

General Issues:
-R1 releases will be brighter/darker than JP releases at times, and will also have some color issues. Also R1 releases generally have inferior video quality compared to the Japanese releases, though there are instances where the R1 release is of higher quality than the Japanese one.
-FUNimation releases prior to 2009 had alternate-angles in order to show the original Japanese credits and eyecatches, and the English-translated credits and eyecatches. This greatly affected the video quality in a bad way. Re-releases with alternate-angles dropped had significantly improved video quality. Relevant ANN Answerman article: Why Do Older Funimation DVDs Have Multi-Angle Credits?
-Many releases will be missing music/won't have them subtitled due to rights issues. The Japanese music industry can be very difficult to deal with, so these issues are most of the time understandable, and people shouldn't hold it against the R1 companies.
-Since the release of Yosuga no Sora in May 2015, Media Blasters DVD titles are released on DVD-Rs, and any reprints of catalog titles will be on DVD-Rs. Some reprints of older releases will have a combination of pressed discs and DVD-Rs. Their Blu-ray releases are pressed, and are not on BD-Rs.

Two things I felt like noting as well in regards to extras...
-Aniplex USA releases will exclude content from the Japanese release, be it physical extras, booklet pages, and/or video extras. On their imports except the $400 Garden of Sinners LE Blu-ray and Persona 5 the Animation: The Day Breakers Blu-ray, special features are not subbed. Also, they'll post some of that content and other content on their YouTube channel when it should be on the Blu-rays themselves.
-R1 releases will be missing physical extras from the Japanese release, particularly releases after singles died. Also many video extras will be missing.

Dragon Ball Z FUNimation Orange Brick DVDs and Season Set Blu-rays
The Orange Brick Season Sets as well as the Season Set Blu-rays (NOT to be confused with the Levels, the only issue those had was some black crush, and no next episode previews (both of these releases suffer that same issue of no NEPs) crop the show from 4:3 to 16:9, oversaturate the colors, and apply very heavy DNR, which actually ripped away footage in the Orange Bricks due to the DNR being way too strong. The Blu-rays do the cropping via pan-and-scan. The later Orange Brick Season Sets do later-on retain the film grain and stop the oversaturating of colors, leaving only the cropping as the only remaining issue.

Some things also worth noting: The Dragon Boxes are currently the best complete release of the series, but are unfortunately permanently OOP. Due to a lack of color correction by Toei Animation, many colors are wrong. For instance, Bulma's hair is greenish, the sky is greenish, and skin tones are pinkish in many episodes. Also the Japanese audio will forever have issues due to Toei tossing out the master audio tapes.

Elfen Lied ADV Films Blu-ray
The English audio is muffled, except on the OVA. The issue also affects the OP/EDs despite those being in Japanese. Listening to the OP/ED on the Japanese track is fine, but when you switch the audio to the English dub, it sounds muffled by comparison. This issue affects only the Blu-ray and no other ADV Films release of Elfen Lied.

Trigun FUNimation and Geneon DVD's
(I've slightly edited the quote to make it more accurate.)
AnimeNewsNetwork said:
The initial Region 1 version of Trigun released by Pioneer/Geneon (original Pioneer and Geneon Signature Series) did not include unique opening animations for each episode as did the Japanese release of the series. The first episode's opening animation was used for the entire series in the US domestic releases, while normally, the opening animation highlighted characters present in the particular episode that was playing. Geneon's final releases of Trigun (Limited Collector's Sets 1 & 2 as well as the Remix Singles) have restored each unique opening animation to its original state.
The same situation applies to FUNimation's releases, their first release had only the first version of the OP, however the Anime Classics release fixed this. FUNimation's releases also have worse video quality than even the original Geneon singles from 2000. Some comparisons against the Madman and Japanese release below.

Vandread FUNimation DVD's
FUNimation's releases of Vandread have worse video and audio quality compared to the Geneon releases, and also feature some odd video anomalies.
HayateKurogane said:
My go-to example is Vandread, because I have both releases to compare (yes, I know it's Pioneer/Geneon and not ADV, but it's still the same license-rescue re-release situation). The FUNimation release has inferior audio (it sounds tinny, and seems to be rather punchless in the mid-range), and the video is more compressed and thus more artifact-y, and also choppy (perhaps due to an inconsistent and botched IVTC attempt) and features amazing flaws like this.
