It has now been two years since I started doing these quickfire reviews and it’s getting harder to do them with each passing season. But, the show must go on as they say.

Ah Spring. Spring knows when to cheer me up provide me with some really good anime. After the Winter Season felt rather lackluster despite having some good shows worth watching, Spring was looking to shape up to be a more interesting season. With hyped adaptations, high profile sequels and long awaited sequels, Spring looked to be a lot better. So let’s get on with it shall we?

Recommendation Clarification

Go f***ing watch it- This is the highest I can recommend. A show that should be at the top of any priority list and goes down as one of the greats.

Watch it- While not the highest recommendation, this should be a show that you should check out at some point as it is still a good show.

Consider it- If you are a fan of the genre, studio or people behind the show, then you give this one a quick look and see if you can form your own opinion there.

Don't bother- This one you should avoid watching unless you are really curious about this show and can ignore some of the problems that this show has.

Don't f***ing bother- Avoid this at all costs as it is not worth your time and it is best suited elsewhere; even to the extremely curious.

Dr. Stone: New World

Ah Dr. Stone, a show I can always count on to have a good time. This season is more of that science goodness but this time, expanding the world a little bit and actually moving the plot to figuring out why humanity was petrified. The characters are still as enjoyable as ever and the newer additions still keep things fresh. It is basically more of the same which ain’t a bad thing. Dr. Stone always tries to expand things, whether it would be it’s plot or what Senku and co. is able to create next. The only main complaint is the OP is easily the weakest in the series but the ED is probably the best in the series. With the second cour set to air this fall, it should get very interesting.

Ousama Ranking: Yuuki no Takarabako/Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage

Our boy Boji is back again. This edition of Ranking of Kings is like Slime Diaries where it’s essentially meant to fill gaps in the story that were not shown in its parent anime. It does help explain some things and how things came to be in the main anime. most of them are side stories but others are quite important to the story like Ouken’s backstory or what happened after the main anime finished. It’s also a testament to how good this cast of characters are that they can carry their own weight in their own stories, regardless if they are main or side characters. It is a show that is made for fans of the main series and it is worth the watch if you do like Ranking of Kings.

My Home Hero

I honestly don’t know what to think of My Home Hero. I thought its premise was very interesting, I thought it was well paced and it is able to deliver some good suspense to make it very watchable from week to week. However, it is a show that requires you to have a suspension of disbelief. Tosu Tetsuro is able to create such an elaborate plan to avoid the Yakuza and there is no hint as to how he is able to come up with all this. The show just wants you to go with it but I fail to see how an average salaryman is able to adapt and plan ahead in this situation without having some kind of history to it that the show never tells us. It brings the whole show down and holds it back from being a really good show. Although the production values hold this show back as well. Still for what it gets right, it’s worth considering if you are looking for a suspense drama.

Vinland Saga Season 2

Vinland Saga Season 2 is definitely a change of direction from season one’s violent, action ways but that doesn’t make it anything less. This season really dwells into the mind of people full of hatred and regret and how they are able to overcome their own daemons to move forward. This is especially true for Thorfinn who sees some real significant growth. He was kind of the weak link in a fantastic cast of characters in season one but it’s like it was just setup for him to really take the spotlight this season and is only now starting to follow in his father’s footsteps. And yet he’s not the only character. This is an almost entirely new cast and yet they are able to quickly stand out in their own way with their personal struggles and grievances. The transition from Wit to MAPPA is pretty much the same as Attack On Titan where it’s gotten more gritty but it’s still able to work. Also, "River" by Anonymouz is such a great OP.

Vinland Saga’s story is seemingly only getting more interesting as time goes on and I can’t wait to see what comes next. It may be different from season one, but as a follow up to one of the absolute best from 2019, this is a worthy follow up.

Kubo-san wa Mob wo Yurusanai/Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible

Kubo-san was unfortunately delayed by Covid but thankfully it came back sooner rather than later, unlike two other shows that have been delayed because of the same thing. It was a shame because it was one of the better shows from the winter season. I thought the relationship between Kubo and Shirashi was cute and had plenty of wholesome moments. It’s also one of those girl-teasing anime of the Nagatoro/Uzaki mould that didn’t bother me and it also had a gimmick that didn’t wear out its welcome. It combined to be a very nice package of rom-com goodness.

I have the same feelings about Skip to Loafer as I do with shows like Horimiya where it doesn’t do anything new but it does do everything right. It’s sets up the premise of a country girl going to a city school and just let its characters do the carrying and they really do carry the show hard to great effect. This is a great cast of characters with likeable personalties and characteristics to make each episode more entertaining than it should be. I’m glad it does because the story really isn’t really anything to write home about but it ain’t about some overarching story, it’s about how our characters go about their lives. It makes for great comfort material for slice of life fans and with the usual good production qualities from P.A Works, Skip to Loafer is a good series that worth watching if you are looking for safe yet engaging Slice of Life Show.

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Bakuen wo!/KonoSuba: An Explosion on This Wonderful World!

After the movie, it seemed inevitable that the Megumin spinoff light novel would get adapted to explore the Crimson Village more and Megumin’s backstory. While I do like Megumin, it just isn’t the same without the four idiots together. That’s not the only problem as it feels like the show is just padding and trying to time its twelve episodes to the point Megumin joins Kazuma and Aqua’s party. As such, it kind of drags after episode six. One positive though is that I do like how it explores Megumin and Yunyun’s friendship more thoroughly. It was played for laughs more in its parent series but this show takes their friendship more seriously that these two do actually care for each other.

It is basically more Konosuba but with more Megumin so your enjoyment is going to depend on how much you like Megumin instead of merely tolerating her because you like the Kazuma, Aqua and Darkness more. It is good for what it is and makes a good appetizer for Konosuba season 3 next year, but I do much prefer its parent series over this one.

Mahoutsukai no Yome Season 2/The Ancient Magus' Bride Season 2

5 and a half years since the first season of The Ancient Magus’ Bride and it has certainly felt like it’s been that long. I don’t usually want recap episodes but this season really needed one to catch us up to speed. It continues right where we left off without getting accustomed to who everyone is again. Still, I’m glad it’s back, the world of Magus’ Bride is a fascinating one that is still fun to explore. Chise is still a likeable protagonist that seems to have new issues to deal with now, both with her own personal problems and the story taking some dark turns. However, it feels like we are only scratching the surface on this new storyline. This season felt like setup for something more interesting; getting use to our new surroundings and a new cast of characters. While the conformation of a part two makes this fine, it also makes it not as good as season one, especially when we’ve been waiting for a long time for this to come out. I watched the first season of Magus’s Bride back when I was really getting into the groove into watching seasonal anime and watching a show this gorgeous, this interesting with a likeable and intriguing pair of characters. The world of interesting and it kind of blew my mind away. Now, watching a lot more anime and have had more experience with the medium, I’ve kind of moved on from Magus’ Bride so I wasn’t as enthusiastic watching this season when compared to season one. Is still good though? Yes, just nowhere near as good as the original.

Tonikaku Kawaii 2nd Season/TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You Season 2

Ah yes, the return of Nasa speedrunning through all relationship goals. But seriously, this season of Tonikawa is basically more of the same sweethearted goodness that was a strong point in the first season. While that is fine, it also means that this season kind of drags due to not offering anything new besides some new characters. The strengths are all there but now we’ve gotten over introductions, you need something more to keep fresh instead of just the same. Dr. Stone managed to do this by new inventions and new goals to accomplish to keep things fresh, but Tonikawa plays it safe with its new season. It does mean that the things I like are still here (the relationship and its cast of characters), so I can’t complain too much.

Tengoku Daimakyou/Heavenly Delusion

I had a feeling that this would be the sleeper of the season and while it wasn’t THE sleeper anime from this season, I was right into thinking this was going to be good. If I didn’t like Oshi no Ko as much, this would have been my anime of the season. Part The Last of Us, part The Promised Neverland, Heavenly Delusion executed a post-apocalyptic story really well of characters trying to get by and all of the bad decisions that they have to face. But is also balances its own mystery story really well, making it able to tell two stories and both still be interesting to watch, wandering how these two stories interconnect with one another. I think the characters are very interesting, specifically the main duo of Kiruko and Maru. Production I.G really nailed both the animation and background art. Seriously, some of these shots are great to look at. And the opening is absolute fire, easily being one of the best of the year so far. This really is a great series that I only hope we get more of.

Yamada-kun to Lv999 no Koi wo Suru/My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999

I’ve slowly warmed up to this show as more episodes aired. It mainly comes down to the sweetheart comedy this show seems to have an abundance of, mainly coming from the facial expressions that this show also has an abundance of. I thought the characters were likeable and the two main leads had their own personal problems and they needed each other to sort them out. The supporting cast as well was fun to watch. I thought the animation was solid and the OP was also very solid. It’s just a very solid, good structured rom-com that knows how to have a relaxing time and is one that is worth checking out.

Dead Mount Death Play

I don’t know what to think about this show because I wanted to like this show but my interest kind of fell off after the promising first few episodes. The main problem being is that it has a lot of things set up but doesn’t know when to stop. Having a large cast and multiple storylines but not really knowing what to do with it all, making it kind of boring as it tries to weave all of this together, but not giving it enough time to make them interesting and honestly, hard to follow to the point where you kind of give up trying to figure out what is going on. It feels like it’s setting up for something big that won’t come until the show’s second cour in the fall season. The one thing it does have going for it and that is its quirky humour does work in a world with colourful characters that does try to make it entertaining. Even the character designs help with the quirky humour.

It really is hard to recommend it despite having some redeeming qualities but this might be a hold on a moment here to see how the second cour goes down and all of these storylines are executed better.

Isekai de Cheat Skill wo Te ni Shita Ore wa, Genjitsu Sekai wo mo Musou Suru: Level Up wa Jinsei wo Kaeta/I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in The Real World, Too

Oh look, yet another Isekai where the main character ends up in a fantasy world and ends being overpowered. He starts picking up girls like no other and brushes past most enemies he faces. WE HAVEN’T SEEN THAT ONE BEFORE. Honestly, why should I tell about all the problems this show has because you’ve heard them all before. It’s another typical Isekai that infect anime seasons like the plague that doesn’t offer anything new or isn’t refined enough to be interesting. Just don’t bother with this one.

Mashle

I was worried that this anime wouldn’t pan out well with the suspect director and the production issues A-1 pictures was suffering from Nier: Automata 1.1a and this anime couldn’t help shake that feeling. While the feeling was never shaked away, this show turned out to be good time, especially when you start to realise that this meant to be a parody of Harry Potter by essentially putting Saitama from One Punch Man as the protagonist. It ended being quite a funny anime that I had a good time with. It does have it’s faults, like the animation not being good, the story following a pattern of introducing a new big bad that replaces the previous big bad and some characters, like Lemon Irvine, can get pretty annoying. But, it does know when to make fun of itself and the timing of its jokes are done well. Mash’s blissful ignorance does make for good entertainment, but also raises the question of effective would it continue to be in season 2? Overall, despite its flaws, it was a good time but those flaws can turn some people off.

Jigokuraku/Hell's Paradise

Hell’s Paradise is a very good 8 out of 10 show. It has an interesting plot, interesting characters, your typical quality MAPPA animation and a good, atmospheric soundtrack. It does a lot of things well but never truly excels in anything. There isn’t an aspect in this show where I would say it truly stands out. It just does everything good which ain’t a problem, it just makes it a well balanced show, but nothing in this show helps put it over the top as one of THE best anime of the year. Season, yes, but year? No. Still, it does make for good entertainment. And I would say I had a good time with this. Nothing is really bad about this show, it just never goes above and beyond to be something truly special.

Kaminaki Sekai no Kamisama Katsudou/KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World

What to make of this show? It’s crass, it’s brash, it has terrible CG, the story was all over the place, it’s everything wrong with an anime. But at the same time, it’s crass, it’s brash, it has terrible CG, the story was all over the place and it was utterly hilarious. This was, unironically, the funniest show I watched this season. It has no limits of what it wanted to showcase for the sake of some glorious s**tposting. The story is bonkers with it seemingly doing what it wants just because. The CG was so bad, it was so hilarious that it looked THAT out of place. The characters seem to have no limits on what they want to do. It just takes everything to the extreme to the point that all you can do is sit back and enjoy the ride. This is peak, so bad it’s good. Everything about this show was designed to be so stupid, it just simply works. It makes it hard to decide how I recommend it because it is that bad, but it is also so bad that it takes it to the opposite direction and is so funny. I guess simply put, if you are looking for an anime that defies logic of what makes and anime good, this one is for you.

And there you have it. This season was definitely a lot better than the last season as we had some really freaking good anime come out this season and some good ones to compliment them. Now we move on to Summer, where it has been feeling like the middle of the road season at the moment when it comes to the seasonal cycle. Hopefully, this one can produce some real bangers as well.
