Hey, Remember "Clash of the Titans", that silly Sword-and-Sandals action adventure fantasy movie from the 80s? Y'know the one. On the surface it was about how Perseus was a badass hero, but underneath, it was about how the Gods of Olympus were a bunch of sociopathically spoiled douchebags?

Remember how they made a grim and mean-spirited remake where the angry anti-theist "Gods are Douchebags" message was right on the surface?

Now, Meet "Neo Heroic Fantasia Arion", a grim and mean-spirited Sword-and-Sandals action adventure fantasy movie from the 80s that is about how the Gods of Olympus were a bunch of sociopathically spoiled douchebags?

Sure, you'd expect Ares (the ... God of War) to be a prick, but so is Apollo. In Greek Myth, Apollo was the God of Truth and Light, and he's was supposed to be the most decent, upstanding, honest and even one of the most enlightened of the Gods.
Not so in "Neo Heroic Fantasia Arion"....in this movie, he's a callous, selfish dickbag. A Bishounen asshat you'll love to hate for his Oh-so-punchable face.
Also, incest. Yeah....incest.

So, anyhow, interesting movie.
Fun action flick with crazy villains. The Gods are jackoffs and they all get what they deserve.

(Note: This movie is waaaay out of print, and what I reviewed was a fansub with very, VERY sketchy subtitles. The story rating is probably lower that it would be if I could understand the plot better.)

So, I 'm fine with authors writing their take on established stories, legends, etc, but as anything it can turn out to be bad
Animation, the only reason that i give it a 7, it's pretty good
I like they way that gods are treated more like humans than "superheros", that we are accustomed
These are the only goods things on this movies though
The gods/titans, they don't act like the original ones, or resemblance them in any aspect, Apollo seems more like Dionysus, and Ares is just a moron, Hercules? a nobody
The story just references greek mythology right and left while trying do be the most ... greek drama of all, including all the tropes (even Deus Ex Machina, why not?), and the villains plans and plot twists are just so confusing, some have no reason, it don't build or advance anything

So I stumbled across this old anime through the mal database and decided to to check it out as it's on youtube. My thoughts are it's not that bad, yes the plot has some serious issues and the story is weird and definitely janky as heck but I did enjoy what I watched. The art is very good considering its the 80's it looks very high quality and the action sequences are fun to watch. I also like the character desgins and backgrounds and overall artstyle. The music is nice and I dont have any issues with the voice acting. Now the story it's not ... the best, it feels like a lot of scenes that don't connect to tell an overall story and the narrative is very choppy and janky that being said, I could still follow the story enough and the characters were engaging, and I did enjoy the Greek mythology setting, even though I felt the producers didn't do their proper research. Another issue that I do have with the story is I'm not exactly sure what the theme and overall message is, it's very unclear and messy. However because of the animation, world, characters and actions scenes I still feel this was an enjoyable film and if you can get past the weak plot I think any anime fan who enjoys retro shows will like. Overall 6/10.
