Art house, in relation to cinema, is a genre of films that are intended to be serious artistic works rather than merely popular entertainment but the descriptor can also be applied to anime. Furthermore, avant-garde refers to innovative, experimental, radical or unorthodox concepts and techniques. This can of course also be used in reference to anime and manga.

As MAL currently sadly only allows a max of 50 entries on interests stacks this list mainly prioritises the stand out and most high quality examples of avant-garde and art house anime television shows, feature films, OVAs and short film compilations. For a more comprehensive list which features the numerous experimental short films on the site as well as manga, I direct you to my accompanying Art house, Avant-Garde and Experimental club of the same name.

This list includes arthouse/avantgarde anime movies, so that's anything over 50 minutes, for example: Angel's Egg, Mindgame, Belladonna of Sadness.

This list includes very unique and artsy anime that are around one episode in length, so anything between 20 to 50 minutes. So movies and really short stuff are excluded. Also compilations of multiple unrelated anime (ex: Genius Party) would also be here is each episode is in that timeframe.

These anime have strong & dark depictions of suffering, mental illness, trauma violence, sex and various sociopolitical and economic problems in a grounded way and without sugarcoating it, although in fiction it is often impossible to completely avoid the distorting lense of epicness or melodrama when portraying reality.

When I say that these shows portray reality, I don't mean to say that they are necessarily based in material reality, as some are sci-fi or fantasy. What I mean, is that these shows portray the bleak and harrowing aspects of human condition without pulling any punches, and without romanticizing it (to some extent).

These shows often have a positive and hopeful overall message and/or ending sometimes, so I wouldn't call this a list of "depressing" shows. However, they have in common that they revolve around brutal and mature depictions of psychological, physical and spiritual pain of individuals and society, while also having a haunting and opressive feel to them.

As the title says, I created a stack called "Avant Garde and the Weirdest Box", and some weird Anime was not listed in it, so they will be listed here. Of course, there will also be Avant Garde anime that are not popular or not known by many people.
Well it seems like the real weirdness never ends...

Pia Film Festival (PFF) takes place at the National Film Archive of Japan in September. The PFF celebrates the culture of Self-Produced Film (Jishu-Eiga) and provides many opportunities of rich experience of cinema to both young filmmakers and audiences through various programs since the establishment in 1977.

PFF’s competition was introduced in 1988, and is open to any film completed after March in the previous year. There is no restriction on length, format, genre, nationality or the gender of the filmmaker. Given the problem of defining “Self-Produced Film” in these changing times, PFF opts to accept as “Self-Produced” any film so defined by its director. The submission of films for competition closes in March each year, and every title is seen by at least three members of a fifteen-member pre-selection committee. The rule is: no stopping or fast-forwarding once a film has started. In the second stage of selection, all films which have survived the first stage are seen by all fifteen members of the pre-selection committee. This committee then finalises the choice of films for competition. These films are seen in the festival by an invited jury of professional artists, who deliberate and decide on the prize-winners. The result is announced at a ceremony during the festival.

Looking for some of the funniest trashy and bad anime? Are you constantly digging up bad anime just to end up being bored by how bad it is, rather than laugh at how ironically fun it is? You've come to the right place!

I've only put in anime that made me ironically laugh while I watched it. There's anime such as Ex-Arm that were funny at first, but they also became a pain to watch as the series progresses. I still included it as the first few episodes are unintentionally hilarious. The list is organized from highest to lowest MAL average just to show how it gradually gets worse in quality.

Also, please DM me suggestions to add to this list too, if you have some! Tsui no Sora is excluded for being an h-anime, but it meets the criteria elsewise.

I've watched several anime, such as Inferno Cop, Ghost Stories and gdgd fairies, that miss the cut and require their own stack. Check the URL below for it!

The Taishō (1912-1926) and the earlier decades of the Shōwa (1926-1989) periods had an interesting aesthetic that's rarely featured in anime. I'm not sure where I'll have the cutoff point for the Shōwa period, but I'll emphasize earlier decades—around 1920s-1960s, but maybe a little later if the aesthetic is right. I'll only be featuring one entry per series, so following seasons of whatever appears on here will probably be relevant. I'll probably add the years for each title later.

There's a Taishō list already, so I'll probably be more choosy with that period:
