Uma Musume: Pretty Derby - Road to the Top

I just realized there is a connection between several anime I enjoyed: Zombie Land Saga, Granblue Fantasy, and Princess Connect!: Re: Dive. They are all from Cygames. I usually don't pay much attention to the studios and producers behind the anime I like, but in this case, I thought the stories were entertaining and the animation was a cut above. The fights in Princess Connect were especially well done. And I really enjoyed the music in Zombie Land. I've heard good things about Akiba Maid War but I'm afraid I can't vouch for the rest.

Uma Musume closely mirrors the IRL careers of Japanese race horses that (so far) have raced between 1987 and 2019. Starting with Oguri Cap from Uma Musume: Cinderella Gray and ending with Cheval Grand from Uma Musume: Pretty Derby Season 3.

Small background: Horses are allowed to race when they are in their 3rd year and typically have 3-4 year careers. Then they live peacefully on their farms eating unlimited carrots with the prize money they earned.

Every Uma Musume by semi-release order.
(by that I mean, I bunched together some of the series that are connected to each other, so it’s not exactly the release order but still mainly is.)

There are three “routes” in Uma Musume: The Main Route, the Road To The Top route, and the Cinderella Gray Route.

Each is based off the real careers of different Japanese racehorses, so they all take place in the same universe.

However, the different routes don’t interact with each other aside from some character cameos, callbacks, and references.

This means you can watch them in any order, however, this is the most optimal way to get into the anime in my opinion.

Start with the original trilogy. Watch BNW after you finish Season 1.

Then watch Road to the Top. After, watch Shin Jidai no Tobira since it’s closely connected to it.

Finally, complete Cinderella Gray parts 1 and 2.

Umayon and Umayuru are shorts that can be skipped but give good coverage of more obscure characters. The difference is that Umayuru has a (very) loose narrative while Umayon is completely random.
